WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, AUGUST 22, 1925 AUGUST POPULAR Next Ladies' Day At North Shore Is "Adam and Eve' Day HERE is nothing unusual in the fact that Ladies' day will be held next Tuesday at North Shore club but the events of the day, in the afternoon at least, are a departure from the usual order of things. In the morning there will be a girls' junior event when two prizes will be awarded and there will be blind bogey. Tuesday will also be "Adam and Eve" day at the club. We learn from the club itself that although men will participate in the afternoon game, it will still be "ladies' day," for the women golfers will invite their own partners for the foursome matches and the men will be the fair golfers' guests at din- ner in the evening. There are two stipulations made by the golf commit- tee, however. No player will be per- mitted to have her husband as her partner, and husbands and wives may not play in the same foursome. This week Mrs. A. E. Barron was holder of the low gross prize in the qualifying round for the class cham- pionship which will be played off dur- ing the current month at the time of the contestants' choosing. Golfer Wins Skokie Club Championship Fourth Time FP HE Woman's Golf Championship at Skokie club is always one of the outstanding events of the sea- son, and again this year, Mrs. Edgar Stevens of Kenilworth has added an- other feather to her golf cap, for hers is the honor of winning the first flight with Mrs. Paul Chace, the runner-up. Mrs. A. S. Webster won the second flight, with Mrs. A. J. Mitchell runner- up. In the third flight, Mrs. E. R. Hankins was victorious with Mrs. George Bird, the runner-up. In the non-qualifiers flight, Mrs. S. R. Saf- ford was winner and Mrs. S. Earle Williams was ruuner-up. The qualify- ing round for the championship tour- nament was played off Monday, Au- gust 10, but because of rain, the last matches were not finished until the Saturday following. About 75 golf devotees appeared on the Skokie links Monday of this week on the occasion of Guest day. The prizes given for the choice score on the four short holes were awarded to Mrs. Howard Phillips of Skokie and to Mrs. Harry Wiley, a guest, Mrs. L. T. Zinke tied with Mrs. Phillips, but was defeated in the play-off. Prizes were also given for the low- est number putts on 18 holes. Mrs. E. P. Bartlett and Mrs. A. J. Mitchell tied with a score of 31, with Mrs. Bart- lett winning the play-off, and Mrs. William Smith of Evanston made the fewest number of putts among the 'guests, winning with a score of 35. August 24 will be given over to a medal play match in the morning for MONTH FOR GOLF CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP first low gross and fourth low net scores, and a putting contest in the afternoon. Philanthropic Club Welcomes Visitors HE, regular Sunday afternoon re- cital for the young women housed in the Illinois Club for Catholic Women at 814 South Mich- igan avenue, Chicago, will be resumed in September. This organization was planned by Miss Julia Deal in 1923 and started with a membership of 125 women. The list of members now includes 10,000 women, 500 of whom are Protestant. Girls without homes or employment, or requiring an education are taken care of, and many a young girl who is a stranger in Chicago coming from the Illinois Central depot has been most grateful for the protection given. This Catholic organization, it is stated, co-operates with the Young Woman's Christian association in that it turns newcomers over to them when- ever the club is unable to provide rooms for them. Mrs. James Bremner, president, or Miss Julia Deal, founder of the Illinois Club for Catholic Women, will accept membership applications from any women interested in this philanthropic work. The membership fee is nom- inal. Visitors are welcome to the tea room where luncheon is served daily from 11:30 until 2 o'clock, and Mrs. Bremner or Miss Deal, who are untir- ing in their efforts to help humanity, will gladly explain their work and show all visitors through the club at any time, it is explained.
