Bo Ae oR ee WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY. SEPTEMBER 5, 1925 ols RAVINIA CLIMAX MONDAY NIGHT Triple Bill, Gala Program for September 7 Another performance of "La Tosca" with Mme. Raisa in the title role will be given on Saturday night, Septem- ber 5, Giuseppe Danise being heard as Scarpia and Mario Chamlee as Cava- radossi. Others in the cast are Louis D'Angelo, Giordano Paltrinieri, Paolo Ananian and Merle Alcock. Gennaro Papi will conduct. The last lap of the season will be entered Sunday afternoon, Sept. 6, when a concert will be given bv the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Alfred Wallenstein, 'cellist, as soloist. Sunday night, "Carmen," one of the most popular operas of the standard repertoire, will be given its only per- formance of the season with Mme. Bourskaya in the title role, Armand Tokatyan as Don Jose and Marie Sun- delius as Misaela. Others are Gioco- mo Rimini, Paolo Ananian, Margery Maxwell, Louis D'Angelo. Philine Falco and Giordano Paltrinieri. Louis Hasselmans will conduct. The season will reach a fitting cli- max on Monday night, September 7, when, in accordance with long estab- lished custom a gala program will be presented that will reflect in splendid manner, the dazzling brilliance which has been characteristic of the entire season. Mr. Eckstein has arranged a triple bill for this occasion which will bring before the foatlights an array of opera stars who have rightfully been described as the brightest jewels in the diadem of opera. It is a well estah- lished fact that no place in the world have so many stars of world magni- tude been brought together in one or- ganization as are to be found at Ravi- nia this summer, and on the occasion of the season's gala closing, they will appear in a program of opera scenes which may be called representative of their best work. The first act of "Madame Butterfly" with Mme. Raisa in the title role and with Giovanni Martinelli appearing for the first time this season as Lieut. Pinkerton, will open the program. Lit- t'~ remains to be said concerning the "Butterfly" of Mme. Raisa, who sing- ing the role for the first time in her career at Ravinia this summer, imme- diately won the acclaim of all who heard her and added to her repertoire one of her greatest roles. Mr. Marti- nelli has long been considered one of the world's greatest exponents of the role of Pinkerton and one can readily imagine the heights to which these ar tists will climb in the famous love duet that closes this act. Giocomo Rimini will be heard as Sharpless, a part he has not sung at Ravinia but which holds important place in his repertoire, and Mme. Borskaya will be the Suzu- ki. Giordano Paltdinieri will appear as Goro and Paelo Ananian as the Bonze. Gennaro Papi will conduct. Massenet's "Manon" will provide a splendid vehicle for Mme. Lucrezia Bori and Tito Schipa, the second and third acts of this work being given. which means the inclusion of the fam- ous St. Sulpice scene. These artists have been heard in these roles several times this season, each presentation of the work being followed by public de- mand for its repetition, and in it Mn-e. Bori and Mr. Schipa are found at their best. It has long been known that Lucrezia Bori was the best of the Manons and that Mr. Schipa was the premiere Des Grieux. It was little wonder then that when they should be cast vis-a-vis at Ravinia this summer they should bring new meaning to this brilliant opus of the French school. Leon Rothier will figure importantly in the presentation of this work, being heard as the elder Des Groeux in the St. Sulpice scene. Others are Louis D'Angelo, Desire Defrere and Virgilia Grassi. Louis Hasselmans will con- duct. "Don Pasquale" of which an excerpt from act three will be given followed by the second scene of Act Two will bring Mme. Bori and Mr. Schipa to still another style of opera, as they will appear as the lovers in a work which is based entirely on comic lines. EMPLOYE PREVENTS DAMAGE Fire which started in a motor car in the Skokie Motor company's place of business at 716 Elm street, last Saturday evening, was held in control by an employe with a small fire ex- tinguisher until the fire department arrived, thus averting what might have been a serious blaze. Practically no damage was done. Otto Dovidat Ladies' and Men's Tailoring 794 Elm Street Over Vollmann's market. SEND LETTERS Explanatory letters will be sent out next week to the parents of all pupils entering Skokie school this fall, it was announced recently by Willard W. Beatty, principal. It has been the custom every year for the eighth grade children to send similar letters to those pupils who will enter the school. The student council of the Skokie school will have a reception committee to meet all new students on the opening day of school, and help them to get properly registered and acquainted with the school. It is planned to elaborate the adviser system' this year so that every pupil will have a personal friend on the faculty to help him. 576 1-2 Lincoln Avenue Winnetka, Illinois Furniture MISS HERBST Unusual New Christmas Cards. both have time, a substantial reduction will be made.
