WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1925 NEW RAIL WORK -- -- Skokie Valley Route of North Shore Line to Be Ready for Use Next May JOB 50 PERCENT DONE Begin Work on Electrical Transmission System Construction of the new Skokie Val- ley division of the Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee railroad -- the North Shore line--is moving ahead at remarkable pace. Under the leader- ship of D. H. Howard. engineer of construction, a force of 880 men is working night and day to carry through this great extension project in record time. Next May is the month set for beginning operation over the new line, placing Mundelein, Liberty- ville and all intermediaae points literal- ly at the doorstep of Chicago. On September 15 a total of 21 miles of the 46 miles of track included in the development program had been laid. Ten miles of northbound track had been laid and more than four miles of southbound track. This is almost 50 percent of the 36 miles of track comprising the main extension from Dempster street to the point where it connects with the Libertyville 'Branch. In addition, four of the six miles of track to be laid on the old West line from Libertyville to Valley Junc- tion at North Chicago, had been in- stalled. New Double Track Stretch The last three miles of second track on the Libertyville branch also has been laid. This gives the North Shore line a complete double-track system, already in service, from Lake Bluff to Mundelein. Of the total of 587,400 cubic yards of grading required in this great en- terprise, 303.000 cubic yards has been completed The balance of this huge amount of grading will be done within the next two months. + A total of 25,000 cubic yards of bal- last has been placed, and the track ___.raised to its permanent location. "We expect to have all of the 46 'miles of track faid before winter sets in," said Mr. Howard. "That will make it possible to continue overhead work without interruption during the win- ter. Work is now in progress on placing the concrete foundations for the catenary construction. The en- ergy and efficiency of our men makes me most optimistic regarding progress and completion of the big job." In addition to the 880 men employed by the L. E. Meyers Construction company, Mr. Howard has a force of over 100 working in his two erecu- tive offices at Blodgett and Liberty- ville. These two offices and the site along which the line is being laid are a veritable beehive of industry. Lay Permanent Track Persons viewing the track laid along- | side the big steel towers of the Public Service company transmission line, are often heard to pass remarks about the large amount of "temporary track" being used. But they are wrong. This is not temporary track, but the permanent line along which high-speed electric trains will be run- ning next May. In case there is a depression, a trestle is erected to sustain the track. Grading material and ballast are later dumped into place, the trestle remain- ing as part of the permanent roadbed within the filling. Thus the permanent track supplies the road over which I ballast and other construction material for finishing the line are hauled. There are only about five miles of temporary track at the ballast pits and other points not on the line of construction. Steel Tower Supports The question is often asked why the new road is being constructed so near the transmission line of the Pub- lic Service Company of. Northern Il- linois. That represents a rare bit of foresight and sagacity on the part of the company back of the big project. The steel towers will form one of the supports for the catenary construc- tion, making it necessary to erect only one supporting pole. For the informa- tion of those not understanding the term "catenary," this'is a method of suspending the trolley line on an aux- iliary wire so that the copper feed wire is exactly horizontal to its entire length. A supporting tower will be erected opposite each of the steel transmission towers, which average about 250 feet apart.
