rE 12 WINNETKA TALK October 3, 1925 EXTEND GAS SYSTEM North Shore Gas Company Now Sup- plies Territory West of North Shore. Patrons of music on their way to Ravania Park this summer, may have noticed when passing over Sheridan road in Glencoe, blocks of six-inch welded steel pipe worming itself in and around curves in the road like a huge snake, as it followed in the wake of a trenching machine that was cutting a path for it through the ground very much as a knife would cut cheese. This pipe, the property of the North Shore Gas company, says Lester Price, assistant general manager of the com- pany, is but part of a new high pres- sure transmission line varying in size from eight to six inches that will ex- tend from Winthrop Harbor at the Wisconsin state line to the southern limits of the Village of Winnetka, and will represent when completed one of three main arteries or trunk lines run- ning north and south through the terri- tory with a combined capacity suffi- cient to take care of any demands made by the many communities served. Penetrate West Area While the north shore is recognized as the fastest growing and perhaps most desirable group of suburbs in the middle west, there is great activity and expansion in process of development in the country immediately adjacent, to the west. Into this virgin territory the North Shore Gas company has also extended its main, and gas has been introduced into many homes in the growing villages and rural districts of Fremont, Vernon, Northfield and other townships. Thus it is now possible by means of high presure distribution, to tie up, not only towns and cities remotely located from points of manuZ facture, but to tap the farms on the way, and by lateral side lines, the far away places where heretofore such luxuries were never dreamed of. These plans, which are a part of the expansion policy adopted by the com- pany this year to keep pace with its territory, embracing some 20 commu- nities and a population close to 100,- 000, involves the expenditures of large sums of money. Additional aquipment must be installed; it must construct new plants and the funds available for this cannot be obtained from earnings. Therefore to provide this capital, the company has adopted the practical and well known plan of "Customer Owner- ship," through the sale of seven per cent preferred stock to its patrons. This stock which has a par value of $100, is widely distributed throughout the north shore and the number of shareholders, said Mr. Price, is now in excess of several thousand, greatly exceeding the anticipation of the offi- cials. "An important feature in the sale of the stock lies perhaps in the par- tial payment, whereby small weekly or monthly sums can be made to earn as high a rate of interest as though the shares were purchased outright. This feature as it became known and understood proved to be a strong fac- tor in their sale. Dividend checks for the quarter ending September 30, are being mailed this week."
