October 3, 1925 WINNETKA TALK 5 Interesting Program Opens New Year for the Woman's Society The first meeting of the Woman's society of the Congregational church will occur, Wednesday, October 7, in Community House. The quotation, "New occasions teach new duties and new opportunities develop new meth- ods," comes to the mind of one of the members as apropos of the open- ing of the new club year. At 10 o'clock sewing will be ready and an hour for friendly greetings arranged. At 11, Mrs. Sherman Goble will per- sonally conduct all present on "A Short Visit to Nazareth and Jerusa- lem." The devotional service will be from 12 o'clock until 12:15. The lun- cheon, which will be served at 12:15, will be followed immediately by a violin trio given by Mrs. Valona Brewer, Mrs. Sidney Bartlett, and Mrs. Robert Kingery, with Mrs. Ar- thur Dean accompanist. The program will precede a talk on "India" by Mrs. Charles Gilkey. Mrs. Gilkey spent much time in In- dia last year with Mr. Gilkey, and had unusual facilities for study and first hand observation of conditions there. The women of the church feel very happy to offer this address to all who care to hear it. Mrs. Gilkey will speak at 1 o'clock. "Why not arrange your winter schedule so as to enjoy these first and third Wednesday meetings at Com- munity House?" is a question asked. They are different from the old-time church meetings for women. The sew- ing covers much varied needs as those of the (1) Chicago Commons Social settlement, almost as well known as Hull House; (2) a Leper Home for Children directed by Samuel Higgin- botham of national réputation; (3) girls in the Mary Bartelme home; and (4) the Infant Welfare society. The programs offered are always both entertaining and instructive, and a welcome is extended to every woman who enjoys meeting and co-operating with others. Mrs. John Janette, 315 Abbottsford road, assisted by Mrs. James Enright, Mrs. Leo Hillman, Mrs. Snider, and Mrs. Frederick Albright, opened her home last Tuesday afternoon for a bridge party to benefit the School for the Blind in Chicago. There were 26 tables, and a goodly sum was real- ized and sent with much joy to the school. -- Mrs. William H. Nicholls, 660 Pine street, left Wednesday evening for a three weeks' stay with relatives and friends in Des Moines and a brief visit with relatives in Denver.
