48 WINNETKA TALK October 10, 1925 SKOKIE PUPILS PLAN GREAT PAGEANT-PLAY Performance Tonight to Depict Experiences of Columbus on Memorable Voyage This evening the pupils of the dra- matic classes at the Skokie school are presenting a pageant-play, "Columbus, in the Jane Kuppenheimer Memorial hall The play is the same as that given two years ago by the Skokie pupils on the anniversary of Columbus Day. It is being repeated this year in accordance with a custom of re-| peating significant celebrations of a patriotic nature every two years. When the play was first given it was more highly commended for effec- tiveness and artistry of setting than any previous play that had been given at Skokie. There are three scenes, the first laid at the convent of La Ribida in Spain. Here we find Colum- bus in consultation with Prior Juan, following his failure to enlist the fi- nancial support of the Court of Fer- dinand and Isabella for his projected voyage across the Atlantic to India. As a result of his visit to Prior Juan Columbus secures support for his ad- venture and in Act II we find him on board ship bound westward across the trackless ocean. Joaquin Miller's poem, "Columbus," has supplied bus is attacked by the imagined sirens, | furies and demons of the western ocean, all of whom he repels, holding the course of his ship ever westward. The conclusion of the scene brings the light which justifies his belief in land to the westward. Portrays Famous Landing Act III portrays the landing of the Spaniards on the island of San Sal- vador, and their first contact with the Indians, bringing out the superstitious belief of the Indians in a white god who would some day return bringing the | theme of this second scene and Colum- | them peace and plenty. It was this belief which accounted for the peaceful receptions which the Spaniards en- joved during the early years of their Mexican occupation. The play has been called a pageant of perseverance because throughout both the words and the music the theme which is expressed in Joanquin Miller's lines "He gained a world; he gave that world its grandest lesson, On! Sail On!" has been stressed con- tinuously. The play was written by Mrs. John [J. Cuddy, supervisor of English liter- ature at the State Teachers college in | San Francisco. Much of the music | was written by her colleague, Mrs. Mary Weaver McCauley, supervisor of music at the same college. Some ad- ditional music was written by Miss Katherine Ramsay, formerly music teacher at the Skokie school, and more added this year by Mr. Griff Lathrop, now supervisor. of music in Winnetka.
