28 WINNETKA TALK November 21, 1925 Tell What Constitutes a Good Automobile Driver "Years ago the could drive fast was considered a good driver," says Charles M. Hayes, presi- dent of the Chicago Motor club. "Times have changed. Any fool can drive fast nowdays. The good driver is made through experience and educa- tion. He is always on the alert for danger. Here are some of the things that indicate a 'good driver. "He stops at rallroad crossings and looks both ways before crossing. On a grade he always crosses in low speed. He stops before emerging from an alley, and blows his horn. He signals his intentions to those in the rear. He never pulls away from a curb without looking back to see if the road is clear. He gets over on to the inside lane of travel when turning left, and he pulls over near the curb when turning right. He never passes another car going in the same direction at a street intersection; he knows pedestrians are injured that way. He slows down when passing schools, churches, or buildings where public gatherings take place. He never passes another car on a hill or on a curve. He gives the right-of-way to cars approaching from the right. He slows down to ten miles an hour at street car crossings. He is courteous to other motorists and to pedestrians. He knows the laws and ordinances, and obeys them. Everyone likes to ride with the good driver." man who Mrs. Emmons Blaine, Jr., 960 Sheri- dan road, president of the Chicago Field Hockey association, had as her house guests last week, the captain and two members of the Irish hockey team playing in the Mid West Hock- ey tournament at Washington Park. The Store of Good Shoes i RS---------- Want Uniform Driving Laws in Central West Some day, in the not too far distant future, motorists will enjoy the benefit of standard traffic reguzations in Illi- nois, Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana, if the dream of the Chicago Motor club comes true. And the club*is already at work to make the plans materialize, according to an announcement today by Howard M. Brown, general manager of the motor organization. It is hoped the scheme will help to reduce accidents. | Workers have been sent out through the state to enlist aid of officials of municipalities in the first step, the adoption of standard trafic regulations in the towns and cities of Illinois. A uniform code throughout the four states is expected to eventuate in time from the plans now being put in motion. "We have already begun to enlist the co-operation of Illinois municipal- ities," said Mr. Brown. "Within a few months we expect to hold a meet- ing of city officials in Chicago in order to secure their aid in having standard traffic codes enacted in their cities. "Now the motorist does not know what to do, although he wants to obey the law. In some cities it is against the law to pass a street car, in others it is not. We even have different rules in different parts of Chicago." The Chicago Motor club began its campaign after a conference with offi- cials of the Detroit Automobile club. 4 "Patents Obtained Trade Marks Registered Consultation Free MILO B.
