November 28, 1925 WINNETKA TALK THEY ARRIVE EARLY FOR THESE CONCERTS Also, the Patrons of the Sym- phony Players of Chicago Remain to Praise By MUSIC CRITIC The second concert of the current series of Dasch concerts at New Trier hall went off with brilliancy on Tues- day evening, November 24. As. usual the hall was filled at 7:45. Evidently the event is socially as well as music- ally attractive. Or it may very well be that our orchestral patrons realize that it's the late bird that gets the poor seat. The Symphony Players opened their program with the overture to Carl Nicolai's comic opera, "The Merry Wives of Windsor." The piece is re- markably entertaining, being, as one critic says, ¥one of the few German light comedy overtures which can hold their own with the lighter overtures of Auber, Herold and Rossini." A de- lightful melody recurs many times in this overture. Its value was enhanced by the easy and expressive manner with which the orchestra presented it. Following this, came that one of Mo- zart"s symphonies regarded by some well known connoisseurs as his "orches- tral masterpiece." It was played with a sure feeling for its grace and beauty. As an encore the genial director gave the audience another of Mozart's in- camparable minuets. The third selection on the evening's program was a violin solo by Catherine Wade-Smith. Miss Smith has achieved considerable fame, being the first solo- ist to appear with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and also having been sev- eral times on the programs of the Chicago Symphony orchestra. She is certainly an admirable violinist. Her playing of the Lalo number was a joy to both eye and ear. Her powers of interpretation were equaled only by her surprising technical ability. She is a young woman of much style and un- usual promise. The second half of the concert con- sisted of compositions by Rubinstein, Liszt and Berlitz. Few of these 1ed- letter occasions have been so uniiorm- ly enjoyable as this, the latest. Miss Mabel Forberg of 960 Linden avenue left Wednesday to spend Thanksgiving with her sister, Miss Serena Forberg, who is attending the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
