December 18, 1926 WINNETKA TALK C. OF C. GIVES STAND ON ADVERTISING ISSUE Winnetka Organization Explains Why It Must Refuse to Advertise in Programs (By C. of C. MEMBER) The Winnetka Chamber of Com- merce is called upon at various times to advertise in programs of different organizations. It has steadfastly re- fused to do this, and in order to bet- ter understand the objects and atti- tude of the Chamber of Commerce, the following is quoted from the organiza- tion's by-laws. "The Winnetka Chamber of Com- merce is organized for the purpose of the advancement of the commercial, industrial and civic interests of the community, to promote integrity and good faith, just and equitable principles in business, uniformity in community usage, and to acquire, pre- serve and distribute industrial, com- mercial and civic statistics and in- formation of value; to discover and correct abuses; to prevent or adjust controversies; to have a part as rep- resenting our community in the con- sideration and decision of community, county, state and national policies which may in any wise effect or pro- mote the progress, development and well being of our citizens. Takes Neutral Stand "This Chamber in its activities shall be non-partisan, non-sectional and non-sectarian, and shall take no part in or lend its influence to the election or appointment of any candidate for national, state, county or village of- fice, neither shall it be sponsor for, nor originator or initiator of any yil- lage, county, state or national legisla- tion, but may after any measure is presented for consideration, take an active part in bringing about the pas- sage of such measure or the defeat of such measure as may effect the civic, industrial or general welfare of the community. It can be seen that the Winnetka Chamber of Commerce is an associa- tion of business and professional men and women, whose object is the bet- terment of the entire community, and in order to accomplish this result, it is often necessary to spend large sums of money. This money is raised among and through the efforts of the mem- bers of the Chamber of Commerce. Explain Position If the Chamber of Commerce were to advertise in programs of other or- ganizations, it likewise would be in order for it to solicit other organiza- tions for advertisements when it prints programs for different events. This explanation is made in order that everyone may better understand the objects of the Winnetka Chamber of Commerce, and to show why it does not advertise in programs. Rotarians to Present Gifts to Orphan Tots Members of the Winnetka Rotary club will enjoy their annual Christmas party Friday noon, December 24, at Community House. Arrangements are in the hands of Herbert Paulson, chairman of the club fellowship com- mittee. Tn addition to the usual round of fun, the Rotarians are to contribute gifts which will later be sent to the children at the Lake Bluff orphanage. CHINESE EDUCATOR HERE T. Y. Wang, M. FAVOR BAND PROJECT Chamber of Commerce Lends Moral Support to Effort to Secure 2 Mill Revenue Plan in Winnetka The Village of Winnetka last spring voted down a proposition to levy a 2 mill tax, as authorized by state law, for the support of a band, a proposi- tion which was defeated by about five to four. The indications are, however, that the question may again be an issue next spring. Alan Miller, representa- tive of the Conn National School of Music, addressed the Winnetka Cham- ber of Commerce Monday evening, ex- plaining the proposition of the Conn school to take charge of all pre- liminary work of obtaining the neces- sary petition to have the question voted upon and attending to all other details pertaining to the promotion of the idea. As far as the Chamber is concerned the Conn school will be permitted to proceed. Some of the Chamber mem- bers said it was the first time they had ever been offered so much for nothing, and they merely voted that Alan Miller, the Conn school's repre- sentative who spoke, might proceed, as far as the Chamber is concerned, and "see what he can do."
