C. Fridman, 723 Ash- land avenue, Wilmette, north shore El- car dealer. It was under direction of A. M. Graffis, chief engineer, that ex- periments were conducted and com- pleted in six states during three years to embody in motor car design what is termed a "greater advancement than the balloon tires." Mr. Graffis is not by any means an advocate of unsafe speed on public highways, says Mr. Fridman, but it is his contention that much time has been lost on the ordinary road due to un- comfortable driving on the chassis of pioneer days. "People hated to be jarred and jolted about," Mr. Fridman quotes Mr. Graf- fis as saying. "That's why a gravel or a dirt road resulted in a considerable let down in acceleration. The balloon tire helped, it is true, but the bumps came anyhow, not with the malice of other days but usually with sufficient force to emphasize that metal hit metal. We made parts of the chassis more vielding and still other sections less susceptible to the rebound. "We tried out road after road to vary our experience and gradually improve riding qualities directly due to changes in the chassis. Our most important step came with the discovery that through the use of fabric joint we could put a stop to the transmission of road noises from the frame to the body of the car. Coincidently the shackle bolts were made wholly super- fluous with this substitute and our work of improvement was complete. Every advance step was marked by countless experiments and tests in this gradual but entirely successful search for a car without shocks and jolts.
