Thus speaks Barnaby Dreary in the second act of "Erstwhile' Susan." At the time, he is engaged in a debate with his wife on the subject of edu- cation. His wife is none other than Susan herself, whose ideas on all sub- jects are always up-to-the-minute. In reply Susan says, "Far be it from me to give expression to my inmost thoughts." No doubt she feels that common decency will not allow her to say more. And there one has the main idea of this play by Marian De Forest which the New Trier High school Dramatic club is to produce Saturday, February 19 in the auditorium of that school. Barnaby Dreary, ignorant, a bit bar- barian in his ideas, constantly strug- gling with his altruistic wife Juliet, erstwhile Susan. Then at the last, Juliet triumphing over the unedu- cated Dutchman and winning freedom for the abused daughter of Barnaby. The play, though it is based perhaps on an almost tragic theme, has many moments of clear comedy. There is, for instance, the time when Barnaby learns that his wife, whom he has obtained from a bureau that agrees "to ack as publick benefactor to bring congenial souls together," is a "noo woman, one Of them sex equality sharps, who lectures to the mothers' social unions about females votin' and energetics." Another priceless comedy scene is the one wherein the Dreary family dines. As one might expect, Barnaby and his sons eat with their knives, drink out of their saucers, and act generally like hicks. Then when Juliet, the new wife, suggests that the family use the napkins laid before them, Barnaby utters the lovely epigrammatic words, "Well, I like a napkin, too, when we've got gravy." As a result of these situations "Erst- while Susan" is a splendid mixture of the hilarious and the serious and a fine chance for amateurs to show their worth.
