WINNETKA TALK March 5, 1927 Vi x OR W N Lee Says: A LADY who lives NOT very far from here TOLD her husband a SHORT time ago that SHE thought they ought TO have a set of SHAKESPEARE in their LIBRARY and he thought so TOO--so they ordered THE books and they CAME, and while the LADY was fixing a place IN the library for them SHE discovered that they ALREADY bad a set of SHAKESPEARE'S works! AND when we heard that STORY we couldn't help THINKING that such a THING as that never COULD happen with a SHEAFFER Fountain Pen BECAUSE you don't buy a SHEAFFER for ornamentation --YOU buy it for every day PRACTICAL use, and it MAKES good every time, POSITIVELY and ABSOLUTELY. The garage was a mass of flames when the fire department was called. The nearest hydrant to the fire was in Sheridan road, 900 feet distant, from which a line of hose was extended in record time, and the fire extinguished without further dam- age. The caretaker's house was not even damaged. Mr. and Mrs. Robert McNeil Burns, 614 Essex road, left Kenilworth last Friday to spend a few weeks in Cuba. Meltzer, who for the past two years has taught the study of wind instruments at the Skokie school and the North Day school, has completed arrangements for his Winnetka studio in Community House, where he will teach the vari- ous instruments of the reed, brass, and fretted instrument groups. Mr. Melt- zer brings to his teaching a thorough preparation, for he has traveled from coast to coast to hear the greatest bands and orchestras and to study with the foremost players of each instru- ment that he teaches. Students of the clarinet, saxophone, cornet, trumpet, trombone, French horn, and other brass instruments will no longer need to travel long distances to get instruc- tion, for the methods of the greatest teachers will be brought to Winnetka by his teaching. Herbert I. Clarke, for seventeen years the cornet soloist and assistant conductor of Sousa's band, Edward B. Llewellyn, the brilliant first trump- et of the Chicago Symphony orches- tra, and A. Liberati, internationally famous cornet soloist, were -his prin- cipal teachers on the cornet and trump- et. He studied trombone with F. H. Innes and Jaroslav Cimera, and French horn with Max Pottag of the Chi- cago Symphony. To gain a thorough knowledge of the clarinet and saxo- phone, Mr. Meltzer went to John A. Carney, formerly one of the first clari- netists of the Sousa band and Val Hendrichs of the Denver Symphony. Fretted instruments were studied with Alfredo Zuartullo, nationally famous teacher of the mandolin, banjo, and ukelele, and drums with George Rob- ertson of the Chicago Civic orchestra. Mr. Meltzer holds two degrees from Northwestern university, representing together eight years of college study. His Bachelor of Music degree was awarded for his studies on the trumpet with Edward Llewellyn, and his work in 'theory, harmony, and composition with Professors Oldberg, Lutkin, and Beecher. 'His Bachelor of Arts degree was won "cum laude" and the honor of election to the Phi Beta Kappa sorority. Studies in piano and voice added to his general musicianship. He has been for six years a member of the Evanston Symphony orchestra and was for four years director of the North- western university band, resigning his position last year to found his own school for wind and fretted instru- ments, which has branches in Chicago and Evanston as well as in Winnetka.
