March 5, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 13 MacDowell Society Hears Director of Goodman Theater Thomas Wood Stevens of the Good- man theater was the guest of the North Shore MacDowell society last Thurs- day evening. The meeting was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Freder=« ick M. Bowes of Wilmette. George Swigart, violinist, with his sister, Es- telle Swigart at the piano, opened the program with three selections: "Prae- ludium and Allegro," by Pugnani, "Adiago" and "Perpetual Motion," by Ries, Waltz, by Cerwonky. Mr. Stevens gave a short history of the theater, emphasizing the present need of conserving great drama. In America producers must find plays that will pay, therefore Americans excel in showmanship and in melodrama. Americans write melodrama and farce but produce no pure comedy in the real sense of the word. The repertory theater implies a per- manent company familiar with a cer- tain group of plays, but does not ne- cessarily involve constant changes of bill. The Goodman theater is striving to retain such a group of efficient ac- tors and to train another group, con- sisting of young people who show de- cided talent for the stage. These stu- dents compete for their places with the theater and there is a constant weed- ing out process going on. The fact that plays are not given for profit al- lows a wide freedom of choice. Mr. Stevens closed his remarks with these words of Kenneth Sawyer Good- many, which embody the object of the Goodman theater, and which are carved above the door: "To restore the old vision and to win the new." Winnetkan Addresses Two Minnesota Groups Paul Nicholas Leech of 1513 Asbury avenue, left Tuesday night, March 1, for Minneapolis, where he made two addresses, as representative of the American Medical association, and the American Chemical society. Mr. Leech is director of the chemical laboratory of the American Medical association, and because of his wide experience and contact with leaders in his field, is well equipped to speak.
