Eat Hot Cross Buns in Lent With the beginning of Lent comes the annual popularity of hot cross buns. With an ancestry thousands of years old, the bun starts this week to better its own last year's record. Thir- teen thousand miles of hot cross buns --the two hundred fifty million would reach from pole to pole--were sold in the United States last year. Centuries before the Christian era, the ancient Egyptians offered "bouns," bearing the mark of two horns, to their favorite moon goddesses. Later the Greeks offered them to their gods, changing the mark of the horns to a cross. The Saxons markeg their buns with a cross in honor of FEostre (Easter), their goddess of Light; and so the historical bun went down the ages and was popularized long be- fore the birth of Christ. Two petri- fied and perfectly shaped buns were discovered years ago at Herculaneum, the ancient city destroyed by an erup- tion of Mount Vesuvius. First a Good Friday custom, then as an Easter treat too, hot cross buns are now enjoyed straight through Lent. In some countries there is the belief that one bun should always be kept for good luck until the following year. In one part of England the peo- ple still believe that a hot cross bun baked on Good Friday and hung in the chimney corner, will insure good ilk atts Best was at Sacred Heart. bread to the housewife throughout the Mr. Yulis is survived by a wife and | Year.
