Commencement Northwestern university candles will shine the country over Sunday eve- ning, May 16, and signal the return of commencement week at the university in Evanston. Following the custom of years, groups of alumni the country over, unable to reach the campus for the irapressive candle-lighting services of that evening, will meet in various places and revere the tradition. Pur- ple candles or white candles tied with bows of purple will flicker every- where and Northwestern songs will be sing and the customary ritual ob- served as they burn. McCallum Heads New Floor Covering Business A. N. McCallum of Glencoe, for- merly of Wilmette, who has been a resident of the north shore for twenty years, has opened offices at 316 W. Monroe street, Chicago, in which he is established as a floor covering ex- pert. Mr. McCallum was until recently as- sociated with the Bigelow-Hartford Carpet company of New York, and has had 31 years' experience in the carpet and rug business. Winn. 1226 |New Choral Group Chooses Officers; Invites Members Music lovers on the north shore will be interested to learn that a choral society for mixed voices has recently been formed in Kenilworth. The group has been meeting on Tuesday evenings at the home of Mrs. E. W. Marshall at 140 Kenilworth avenue, and at the meeting this week officers were elected as follows: Mrs. Charles D. Howe, president; Mrs. A. B. Spach, vice-president; Mrs. Earl C. Moss, secretary-treasurer, A committee, with Miss Barbara Irwin as chairman, has been appointed to draw up by-laws and select a name for the society. Rehearsals have been held under the direction of Francis F. Moore, who has been the organist of the First Presbyterian church in Chicago for the past thirty years, and is at present living at the Kenilworth Inn. = The members have enjoyed their gather- ings this winter and will be glad to hear of anyone interested in singing, particularly male voices. JOHANNA MEETING THURSDAY The last regular meeting of North Shore Johanna will be held on Thurs- day, May 12, at the home of Mrs. L. M. Hamburger at 502 Willow road, Winnetka.
