' June 11, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 11 New North Shore Suburb Will Be Launched June 18 Northfield, first suburb to be estab- lished on the north shore in a genera- tion, will be given a royal welcome by the other communities of which it is to be a neighbor. Plans just an- nounced provide for an all-day cele- bration on Saturday, June 18, which will befit the importance of this civic event. North shore village officials have been invited as guests of honor on Saturday, June 18, when the ceremon- ies ushering Northfield into existence will be celebrated. They have been asked to attend as the guests of John Happ, president of the village board, and the other trustees of Northfield. The mayors or presidents of every suburb have been invited. They in- clude the chief executives of Wau- kegan, Highwood, Lake Forest, High- land Park, Glencoe, Winnetka, Kenil- worth, Wilmette, Evanston, Glenview, Deerfield, Niles Center, Libertyville and Mundelein. Leaders in the financial and indus- trial world also will be the guests of the Northfield board of trustees. With the leaders of the towns they will figuratively shake the new municipal baby by the hand and give their wishes for success to the plans for developing a super suburb. Nixon Company Founders George F. Nixon & company, found- ers and developers of the new town, are formulating the plans for the cele- bration Saturday. Cooperating with them, to make it a day that will be long remembered, is the North Shore line. Northfield lies right at the station on the Skokie Valley Extension of the North Shore Line and special trains from the loop will whisk thousands of guests of the Nixon company over the elevated lines and out to the celebra- tion. The schedule of the special trains will be announced later. Dedication of the site of the village hall will be one of the features of Saturday's celebration. Northfield is laid out around a village green and V-, rebut . | civic center. This green is surrounded | by streets a hundred feet wide and on | ie of these the municipal building The site is being dedicated will stand. by the Nixon company. Efforts are being made to get the services of the famous bands of the elevated lines and the North Shore line and there will be music all day. Speechs of greeting from officials will be made. Other forms of entertain- ment are being devised for the crowds. Luncheon will be served, to which all are invited. "As the newest civic neighbor to Chicago and the older towns along the north shore, Northfield expects a warm welcome," said Mr. Happ, presi- dent of the Northfield board. "We start out Saturday as an infant com- munity, newly born, but we shall be the fastest-growing civic baby Cook county ever saw. Perhaps, even be- fore we realize it ourselves, we shall be stepping right along with full grown strides. Forsee Rapid Growth "It hasn't been possible before to start a new suburb on the north shore and Northfield is the first opportunity. Transportation to the towns just to the east congested those residential districts and real estate prices went beyond the reach of most of those who wanted homes. Now the Skokie Valley line has brought Chicago's loop to within 41 minutes and accessibility of other towns in proportion. "We don't depend on our own opin- ions solely. The telephone, public ser- vice and transportation utility experts can estimate the growth of population and development of a district so ac- curately that they can foresee its needs twenty years in advance. The trans- portation already is there to serve Northfield and the others who will serve the new suburb already have laid their plans to care for a full-sized town. "The interests of every community along the north shore are the same as ours. Their destiny is our destiny. That is why we have invited their of- ficials to extend the hand of welcome and join us in the celebration which | will mark a historical civic event."
