He was edu- cated in Peoria and Springfield, III, and later moved to Needles, Cal, fore going on the stage. His first ap- pearance before an audience was at the old Grand Theater in Los Angeles in 1911, where he played with such nota- bles as Lewis S. Stone, Joseph Degrass, and Florence Reed. After touring up and down the Pa- cific Coast with a small repertoire com- pany, Ray decided to try his luck in pictures, .and made an instantaneous hit in "The Coward" under the Thomas H. Ince banner. He stayed with Ince for seven years, then produced his own pictures, and signed with Metro-Gold- wyn-Mayer about a year ago, for whom he has done "Bright Lights," "The Auction Block," "Paris" and "The Fire Brigade," which was produced by Hunt Stromberg and directed by William Nigh. MAY McAVOY May McAvoy was born in New York City and after graduating from Wad- leigh High school in that city, decided to become a school teacher. However, the screen won her over, and her first appearence was in com- mercial films, though Whiteman Ben- nett, an Eastern producer, gave her an opportunity soon that won her a contract with Lasky's. J., she came to California with her family, and was attending high school when a director noticed her in a high school dancing contest. The result was a role in "Mike" that made her famous overnight. Others of her successes include "Don't," "Sally, Irene and Mary," "Battling Butler," "The Auction Block," and others. D'Arcy is a native of San Francisco. He went to Europe as a youth to study for grand opera, and on his re- turn became a musical comedy star. It was while in a musical comedy that he was selected for the role in "The Merry Widow" that made him famous. KATE PRICE Kate Price, famous delineator of Irish characters, plays Mrs. Lapidowitz in "Frisco Sally Levy." Miss Price, born in Cork, Ireland, went on the stage in Belfast, and after some years there came to' America with her vaudeville skit, "Biddy and the Dutch- man," which she played for twenty- five years. She started in pictures with John Bunny and has played many comedy roles, including those in "Little Lord Fauntleroy," "Tornado," and oth- ers. DAN MASON Dan Mason pulls a "Lon Chaney" in I'he Fire Brigade" in playing the part of "Peg-Leg.' As indicated in his character name, Mason wears a peg over what is apparently a stump, and in a man of Mason's age, this is no easy thing. Mason had to bend his leg double, wearing his foot in the seat of his trousers, as John Gilbert did in the last scenes of "The Big Parade." The Independents, Charles M. Thomson of Winnetka, Oscar M. Tor- rison of Evanston, and Frank John- ston, Jr., were accorded a remarkable vote of confidence in Winnetka where they were said to have won almost 20 to 1. Judge Ira Ryner of Wilmette, a can- didate on the Coalition ticket, was given a splendid vote throughout the township, as was also Judge Mary Bartelme, another candidate on the Coalition ticket.
