Rush Butler of Locust road was Given Awards for Theses on America In an effort to encourage the study of American life and ideals, John C. Shaffer, editor of the Chicago Evening Post, has offered prize awards for the best thesis on the topic by foreign stu- dents at Northwestern university, it was learned today, with the announce- ment of the first awards in the essay contest. Richard M. Sia, of Pao Shu Yuan, Foo Chow, China, and George M. Chavarri of 324 Lambagegue Es- tate, Peru, have been declared this year's winners by the committee of judges. The committee consisting of Prof. Arthur J. Todd, head of the so- ciology department, and Dean Thomas F. Holgate, and Dean James A. James apparently had some difficulty in nam- ing the winners, as both Sia and Chav- arri were chosen to divide the second prize of $50 and none of these were declared comprehensive enough to gar- ner the $100 first award. Both the prize-winners have been felicitated by President Walter Dill Scott. In his statement regarding the rea- sons for offering prizes to foreign stu- dents, Mr. Shaffer has made it plain that he wants to see students from foreign lands become interested in American life and problems. Students who were born in foreign countries and who expect to return there after finishing college work at Northwestern are alone eligible. HEADS BUSINESS DELEGATION Frederick H. Supply While Traveling At this time of the year when va- cations are being planned, mothers are greatly concerned about what kind of milk they will be able to get for their children when they are out of the city. Touring, traveling or vacationing in the country, each offers different problems. As an aid to mothers who plan on being out of the city, Will A. Foster, director of the Educational Department of Borden's Farm Pro- ducts company of Illinois, offers some valuable suggestions : 1. Choose mixed milk from a number of cows in preference to the milk of one cow. and that the utensils used on the dairy farm are washed and sterilized. 2. Dairy cows that have been tested for and declared free from bovine tuber- culosis, usually have a metal tag bearing the serial number and state in which tested, clipped in the right ear. 3. If the milk has not been properly pasteurized, heat it in a double boiler to 160 degrees Fahrenheit, and maintain | 4.
