Competi- tion in the elimination tourney in both singles and doubles was excep- tionally keen and as the "running" narrowed down to fewer contestants, it became more so. The courts were in splendid con- dition, in fact, it was stated that they were the best that have ever been pro- vided for a Winnetka Day celebra- tion. Forty-eight contestants, or 24 teams, were entered for the doubles and as play began, each entrant called upon his particular lucky star for aid. "Ringers" and "leaners," stake bit- ers" and "wild boys" were all in evi- dence as the grind went on. Finally the last shoe was pitched and Howard Dickau and Orville Edwards carried home the cup. In the singles, a like interest was apparent but the field was a little less crowded and the title closer as only 8 entries were recorded. These, how- ever, were the pick of the Village and made the dust fly as they "felt out" the stake. George Woods emerged the victor in this division. The cups won in the Winnetka Day celebration are open to challenge, it was announced. That is, anyone de- siring to compete with the present holders of the championships may ar- range contests and play for the title. For the past two vears the champion- ship has been held by E. E. Adams, former Winnetka postmaster, and Fred Radmer. There is a strong ru- mor which, while apparently without official foundation, is still persistent, and has it that the present title holders may expect a challenge from only champions in the near future. Mr. and Mrs. George Engelhard and their family of 1045 Starr road left Friday for Michigan to spend a few weeks at their summer cottage.
