Martinelli as Pinkerton Giovanni Martinelli will appear for the first time this season as Pinkerton in "Madame Butterfly" when this opera is presented on Thursday night, with Elisabeth Rethberg in the title role. Pinkerton is another of the great Martinelli creations and those who have heard this splendid artist with Madame Rethberg in this Puc- cini work will remember the great climax achieved when the love duet brings the first act to a close. The performance of "La Boheme" on Sun- day night, August 14, will give Ra- vinia patrons their first opportunity to hear Miss Mary Lewis as Mimi, the pathetic little flower girl. Mario Chamlee will appear opposite her, singing the role of Rodolfo for the first time this season. Madame Bori, Mr. and Martinelli Mr. Danise will form the trio of lead- ing characters in "Manon Lescaut" when that opera is given again on Saturday night, and Madame Gall will repeat her success as Thais by sing- ing that role for the second time on Wednesday night. "The Tales of Hoffman" with Miss Mary Lewis again as Giulietta will be presented on Friday night, this time Mario Basiola being heard as Dappertuttu. "Afternoon of French Music" The week will formally begin Sun- day afternoon with another special feature--"An Afternoon of French Music'--during which, in addition to the Chicago = Symphony orchestra, under the direction of Eric DeLamar- ter, La Chorale Francaise de Chicago will be heard in a splendid program of French choral singing. Charles La Gourgue will conduct the chorale. The orchestra program will consist Communicable Disease Reduced to Five Cases There were thirty-three cases of communicable diseases reported in Winnetka during the month of July, according to Dr. H. A. Orvis, health officer, but at the close of the month there were only ten. On Thursday of this week that number was reduced to 5. Four of these were mumps and one whooping cough. entirely of numbers by French com- posers. Miss Helen Freund, soprano, and Alfred Wallenstein, cellist, will be the soloists. This affair, like all the Sunday afternoon concerts at Ravinia, will be open to the public and all re- served seats will be free, the general admission at the gate covering every- thing. Like rare old wine, the current sea- son of Ravinia opera and concerts gets better and better as time speeds by, and although Louis Eckstein would seem to have set a record for the week just drawing to a close, there is to be no let-down during the seven day period which begins Sunday, Au- gust 14. Another extra performance has been arranged for Monday night, August 15, this occasion bringing Puc- cini's great dramatic opera, "Tosca," to the attention of Ravinia patrons for the first time this season. Madame Yvonne Gall, who by reason of her splendid performance in "Thais" last Monday night completely won all who heard her, will have the title role, which will reveal still another phase of her versatility and will show her to advantage in a part which is purely dramatic in its vocalization. Giuseppe Danise will be heard as Scarpia, one of his most powerful roles, and Ed- ward Johnson will be cast as Cavara- dossi. Another of the season's high spots will be reached on Tuesday night, when "LaVida Breve," which made such an appeal when first presented at Ravinia last season that four per- formances of it had to be given to satisfy public demand, will be pre- sented. Madame ILucrezia Bori will, of course, be cast as Salud, the tragic little gypsy, a role in which this great singing actress not only has the op- portunity to characterize in her in- dividual and colorful fashion, but which she sings in her native Spanish tongue. It is doubtful whether in her entire repertoire Madame Bori has a part which is more intense in its dra- matic moments, or which makes greater demands both as to acting and singing. Jose Mojica, to whom the Spanish language is likewise native, will appear opposite her as the faith- Winnetka Barber Shop 571 LINCOLN AVENUE Ladies' and Children's Haircutting a Specialty Our Motto "Service and Sanitation" NASH Leads the World in Motor Car Value S % Po Ed --and August sales will drive far beyond the largest previous pi July Sales 71% Greater than Biggest Previous July August in Nash history.
