NE ---- r= a : ¥ October 15, 1927 WINNETKA "FALK 53 | NEW TRIER IDEAL FOR COLLEGE PREPARATION High Percentage + of 1927 Grad- uates Continue Education; Fifty Colleges on List Facts compiled for the board of edu- cation of New Trier Township High school indicate clearly that the domi- nant purpose of the north shore sec- ondary school is to prepare its students for college work. The figures below indicate to what extent New Trier High school has be- come a distinctly college perparatory school. The figures submitted, while they represent the distribution of stu- dents from the class which graduated in June, 1927, are characteristic in a general way of classes that have grad uated as far back as eight to ten years. A study of the list of colleges and the proportion of students entering them shows that of a total of 136 girls graduating last June, 104 of them went to some college or higher institution of learning, and that of 138 boys grad- uating, 99 went to college or some other higher institution of learning. These figures represent, in the case of | girls, 76.5%, and in the case of boys, | 71.7%. Of the girl graduates who did not go to college, 7 returned to New Trier to take a fifth year of work; 16 went to werk in business houses or of- fices; 4 'have been since married; 2 are at home, and concerning 3 the school has not been able to get definite information. Of the boys, five have returned to New Trier for a fifth year of work; 6 have gone to other prepara- tory schools for an additional year of preparation; 2 are travelling; one has died, and 25 have gone to work. Prepare for College A consideration of these propor- tions makes it evident that the dominant function at New Trier High school is that of preparing boys and girls for colleges or other institutions of higher learning. This in itself means a considerably varied curriculum, since the entrance requirements of the long list of colleges represented vary con- siderably from one another. On the other hand, it appears that there are approximately 20% of New Trier High school students who find it necessary or advisable to go to work immediately after graduation {rom high school. These students deserve the same consideration with respect to the preparation for their future activi- ties as the large numbers who go to college, and for that reason New Trier High school does not neglect to pro- | vide courses adapted to the needs of these students. 50 Colleges Represented The list below indicates the colleges to which New Trier boys and girls have gone from the class that grad- uated in June, 1927. It is a very for- midable list, and since it appears that New Trier students are successfully carrying courses in this long list of universities and colleges, the capacity of New Trier High school as a college preparatory institution seems to have been thoroughly established.
