Charles Benter, then onlv 20 years of ace, was ordered to Wash- ington to take over the work of or- ganizing and selecting the personnel of an official United States Navy band. Previous to that time there had been several band units connected with various ships and naval stations but these were of ordinary calibre and were fast becoming depleted. Lieut. Benter. who had won his chevrons as bandmaster of the U. S. S. Connecticut, immediately set to work to organize a band that would set new stands for naval bands. He began bv getting higher allowances and ratings for bandsmen and then started a recruiting tour. Picking out the best men he could obtain, by 1923 he had brought the personnel up to 67 men. each with the greatest pos- sible ability in his department. Tt is this perfected organization that will present two concerts in Glencoe on November 5. under the auspices of the Glenene Public schools. North shore residents are invited to attend. Fire Drill at New Trier Finds Everybody "On Toes"! The first fire drill of the season was held at New Trier High Tuesday of this week. It was a sur- prise drill with no warning to teachers or students. The building was emptied in two minutes and four seconds. At his time the drill is not as good as it will be toward the middle of the year, after repeated fire drills have been held, it is explained. Last year the shortest time in which the build- ing was emptied was one minute and forty seconds. As usual, the students and teachers co-operated one hundred percent in leaving the building in an orderly and quiet manner, Mrs. Clara McCormack Dies at Winnetka Home Mrs. Clara McCormack, mother of Mrs. F.
