October 15, 1927 WINNETKA TALK Congregationalist . Leader to Preach in Winnetka Sunday' Rev. Robert J. Locke, supetinterident] of the Illinois Conference of Congre- gational churches, will preach the ser- mon at the evening worship in the Winnetka Congregational church, Oc- tober 16. Dr. Locke was at one time pastor of the Congregational church in Cham- paign, Ill, which is attended by hun- dreds of the State university students as well as many of the faculty and townspeople. It was from this pastor- ite that he was called about a year ago to take charge of the larger inter- est of the denomination throughout the state. He and his associate, Rev. Walter Spooner, render great service to the churches of the state, giving wise counsel in their local problems and bringing to the local needs the help and encouragement of the whole state iellowship. He will speak about the united task of the churches of Illinois in which the Winnetka church has a share. While the Winnetka church has never been sectarian, a very large part of its benevolences and its service out- side of the community have been through and in the congregational fel- lowship and this address of the Rev. Mr. Lockes will, therefore, be very per- tinent, it is pointed out. Country Day Pupils Guests at Senior Party and Dance On Friday night, October 7, the seniors at the North Shore Country Day school, invited the other high school pupils to a dance in the gym- nasium. The feature of the occasion was a prize-fight in the form of a take- off on the Dempsey-Tunney fight. The guests sat by classes around the room in "ringside" seats, the boys drawing numbers for their seats, and changing them after each "round," so that all the gentlemen met all the ladies present. The guests were given strips of paper money, tossed balloons in the air, and helped take part in the "stunts" that receded the dance. Discuss Varied Ways of Giving Old Santa Great Welcome Here With the Christmas holidays only ten weeks in the offing, the Winnetka Chamber of Commerce at its meeting Monday evening discussed various methods of appropriate community dec- oration for the gladsome season Suggestions of community trees, one in the main part of the villace and one in Hubbard Woods, were made. Snecial holiday lighting of the business district was thought by others to be advisable and others felt that the merchants by specially decorating their respective show windows in holiday attire, and for which prizes would be offered by the Chamber, would be most effective. The matter was finally left to a com- mittee to consider the suggestions and report back to the Chamber at its November meeting. The members of the committee from Winnetka proper are, E. C. Weisenberg, O. L. Porter, George Parker, and Lee Adams. From Hubbard Woods are, Henry Klauke, R. W. Albertson, Gerald Roche, Mr. Dean, and E. Sturlini.
