October 22, 1927 WINNETKA TALK Tells How to Show Tulips in Garden to Best Advantage By Rosa Rugosa loo often tulips are planted in haphazard fashion without any thought given to arrangement of color, height. or variety. A magnificent range of torm and color will be found in the Darwin tulip, most suitable for a forms il garden. They should be planted in groups of a dozen or more of one variety. The Clara Butt, a delicate ap- ole-blossom pink, with just a touch of salmon and silver shading, is one of the best of the Darwin variety. Farncombe Sanders, a very large rosy-scarlet with white base, is a popular variety. The Darwins loom in May, and for soft colors in all tones of pink and red, mauve to roval purple and violets to a color bordering on black, they are unequalled. Among the Cottage tulips will be found the unusual type, most excellent for natural effects in gardens of an informal character. Numbered among the favorites are the Ambrosia, in color an exouisite amber rose, the Alaska, a golden yellow with a very long flower with pointed petals, and the Dido a brilliant orange red turn- ing to orange yellow near the edge. The inside has a black bordered deep yel- low base. Tt is a magnificent flower with a strong, long stem. It is impos- sible to give space to the many new Cottage types, each more interesting than the other, The Breeder tulips can be planted to good advantage between evergreens and in sunken gardens. They, like the Darwin, flower in Mav and have the most peculiar colors of the tulip fam- ily. Many soft buffs, browns and cop- pery bronze abound in these artistic | and agreeably fragrant flowers. Produced in France by Marcel L'- Herbier, said to be the most intelligent director of that country, the film res lates an episode in th life of the ar- tistic Pascal who pretends he is dead | in order to escape his monotonous ex- istence. Two actors became famous through this film. Lois Moran, one of the most | popular leading women in America, made her motion picture debut in "The Living Dead Man." The other is Ivan Mosjoukine, a Russian, who has since plaved many important roles including the leading part in "Michael Stroghoff." Mosioukine is now in Hollywood work- ing in a film for an American produc- ino company. Following the showing of the Piran- dello opus, the Plavhouse will present "Polvkushka," a Russian drama, with Tvan Moskvin, one of the greatest Rus- sian actors of all time, in the lead. Mos- cow Art Theater Players are in the sunnorting cast. Other films to be shown here short- |1y are "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," the film which more than any other is responsible for the little cinema movement: "The Street," a psycho- logical drama" and Tolstoi's "Power of Darkness."
