As a result of the interest in child training thus created, the Chicago Kindergarten college, now | the National Kindergarten and Ele-| mentary college, a training school for | teachers and mothers, was organized | in 1886, with Miss Harrison as presi- | dent. | During the years from 1886 until her | retirement in 1920, Miss Harrison was known as an outstanding educator | and an authority on childhood educa- | tion and the training of teachers for | this work. She instituted the famous | Literary schools of the early 90's, was | one of the first women to appear on | the program of the National Educa- | tion association, lectured frequently before meetings of the National Con- cress of Mothers, the International Kindergarten Union and other organi- zations, and, in 1912, at the request of the Bureau of Education, Wash- ington, investigated the work of Madam Montessori in Rome. Miss Harrison was a graduate of the Froebel Kindergarten Training school of Chicago and studied with Susan Blow in the St. Louis Kindergarten Training school, with Madam Kraus- 3olte in New York, and in Europe with Baroness Marenholz Von Bulow, an intimate friend of Froebel.
