Bees mie | | - ---- November 26, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 49 85 MILLION XMAS SEALS NOW ON SALE Work of Organization for the Campaign in Winnetka Has Been Completed Eighty-five million penny Christmas seals have just been received at the of- fice of the Chicago Tuberculosis insti- tute, 360 N. Michigan boulevard. They were distributed throughout Chicago and Cook county to be sold during the annual Christmas seal campaign, which opened on Thanksgiving day. The work of organization for the Christmas Seal campaign in Winnetka has been completed. This is the twentieth annual Christmas seal sale. For just a score of years the seals have come to wish us 'Merry Christmas and better health, and to embody the Christmas spirit in their colorful designs. During this period, in which the money thus raised has been used in curing and preventing disease and in promoting hygiene and sanita- tion, the tuberculosis death-rate has been reduced more than 55%, infant mortality 20%, and the general death- rate 10%. The snake is scotched but by no means totally disabled. We learn from recent statistics that the rate has even been rising among the large cities, S44 also among girls between 13 and The twentieth anniversary seal de- picts Santa Claus in a gift-laden sleigh driving reindeer over a snowy field. At the right rear is a clump of evergreen trees partly obscured by the design of the red double-barred cross; the symbol of the international tuberculosis cru- sade. ~The color scheme is red, green, blue, brown and white. Although the size of the seal is the same, the shape differs from previous years, be- ing longer in the horizontal direction. The legend is "1927 Christmas greetings and good health." John H. Luensmans Take Residence in Northbrook Patrolman John Heury Luensman has returned to his duties at the Win- netka police station and is receiving congratulations on his marriage, No- vember 16, to Miss Marjorie Esther Huston. Mr. Luensman is a soa of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Luensman of Winnetka, and is a graduate of New Trier High school. Miss Huston is well known in Winnetka, having re- sided here for the past four years. The wedding took place at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Huston, at Orion, Ill. The Rev. A. D. Freden of the Burlington Lutheran church read the service at 8 o'clock in the évening, before about fifty guests. A short musical program preceeded the ceremony, and Mendel- ssohn's Wedding March was played as the bride entered the living room, where the service was read. A lunch- eon was served following the cere- mony. Frank Luensman of Winnetka was best man for his brother. Following the wedding, Mr. and Mrs. Luensman returned to Winnetka, and are at home in Northbrook. Winnetka people who weat to Orion for the wedding include: Mr. and Mrs. Herman Luensman, Frank Luensman, and Miss Freda Heinig. Mrs. H. Justin Smith of Glencoe, formerly of Wilmette, gave a luncheon and matinee party Wednesday for Mrs. Hope Thompson and Mrs. C. P. Van Schaack of Wilmette and Mrs. Carl Hecker of Deerfield. ---- Mrs. Albert Pick, Jr., returned to her home on Cherry street from the Ev- anston hospital with her three weeks' old baby daughter on Saturday last. New Trier Cagers Start Practice; 15 Games Slated With fifteen games now scheduled for the season, New Trier High school cagers started practice for the first time this fall on Friday of this week under the direction of Head Basket- ball Coach Grater. Previous to that time, the boys were "weighed in" and assigned to their proper divisions and over one hundred candidates were recorded in both the lightweight and heavyweight sections. Among the players reporting for practice Friday were four letter men from last year's squads. In the heavy- weight division Capt. John Sheldon, the only regular first string man of the four, and Nelson and Markley were out. Stanley Smith was the letter man reporting in the lightweight section. Fach game of the season with the exception of the tilt with the Strivers, Ohio, five, on February 25, will be a double-header, both the lightweight and heavyweight teams being entered for competition. The first of the games is scheduled for December 3 when Crane Tech of Chicago comes to New Trier to assist in prying off the lid of the basketball season on the north shore. Nine of the season's tilts will be on the home floor while the remainder will be out of town games. The schedule is as follows: December 3--Crane Tech at New Trier. December 9--Lindbloom at Nw Trier. December 21--New Trier at Proviso. January T7--Proviso at New Trier. January 13--New Trier at Morton. January 20--New Trier at Evanston. January 24--Deerfield at New Trier. January 27--Oak Park at New Trier. February 3--New Trier at Waukegan. February 7--New Trier at Deerfield. February 10--Evanston at New Trier. February 17--Morton at New Trier. February 21--New Trier at Oak Park. February 25--Strivers (Ohio) High school at New Trier. March 2--Waukegan at New Trier. "Menace of Intolerance" Uptown Forum Discussion "The Menace of Intolerance" will be the subject for discussion at the meet- ing of the Uptown Forum at the Peo- ple's church, 941 Lawrence avenue, Chicago, Sunday evening, November 27, with Kirby Page, editor of the "World Tomorrow," as speaker. Mr. Page is a specialist in the ministry of reconcil- liation between racial and religious groups separated by prejudice and the intolerant spirit. In the question period following his address he is sure -to handle without gloves every reference to social conditions featured by the sub- ject under discussion. The meetin will begin promptly at 8 P. M., wit Fred Atkins Moore of the Chicago Forum Council presiding. Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Pick of 1192 Chatfield road have subdivided their estate, and are building on a portion of it. They intend to occupy the resi- dence when it is completed. The gifts included 312 cans of fruit and vegetables, 1474 quarts of pickles and preserves, 91 glasses of jelly, 20 pints of marmalade and a variety of other things such as dates, cereals, figs, carrots, apples, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, cabbage, grape fruit, pota- Joes, sugar, marshmallows, and pump- ins. Gifts from the Kindergarten and Primary grades were sent to Chicago Commons. They included 20 cans of vegetables and fruit, 5 glasses of jelly, 3 boxes of apples and some oranges and figs. Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Ridgway have sold their home at 800 Bryant avenue and will leave Winnetka in about two wekes to make their permanent home in Pasadena. They will take with them their six little girls, Judy, Betty, Patty, Petie, Conny and Carroll. Mr. and Mrs. Morton Cahn, who have been living at 1034 Pine street, have pur- chased the Ridgway home.
