Joseph B. Coambs of 142 Church road, Winnetka, was last week made president of the American Guaranty company of Columbus, O., which has just passed into the hands of Smith- Lawson-Coambs company of Chicago, through their purchase of 99 per cent of the stock of the American Guaranty company. The new officers propose to increase both the capital and the sur- plus, and to carry this company into new territory, including Illinois. It now operates only in Ohio, Indiana, and West Virginia. Mr. Coambs has had over 17 years' experience in the casualty and surety field. For the past 12 years he has been treasurer of the Smith-Lawson- Coambs company of Chicago, and has recently been at the head of the claim department of the Equitable Under- writers. Mr. Coambs is one of the youngest men to have such great re- sponsibility in this field. He began as a "broker on the street"; from 1913 to 1915 he was general agent in Chi- cago for the Southern Surety com- pany; and since 1915 has been a mem- ber of Smith-Lawson-Coambs. PRAISE FOR RECITALISTS (Contributed) The first of the historical musicals given by Mr. Walter Spry and Valona Brewer at the Winnetka Woman's club on Thursday, December 8, was most delightful. In spite of the bitterly cold weather, it was well attended. It is hoped that Winnetkans will not lose this opportunity to instruct not only themselves but their children in the hearing of high class music with the deep feeling and expression shown by both artists. The next musical is January 19. I.ee Fetcher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Fetcher of 822 Bryant avenue, will return from Cornell university, where he is a sophomore, on Saturday, December 17, to spend the vacation with his family. New Pastor Takes Pulpit Sunday at St. Mary's Church St. Mary's pastorate goes to the Rev. Francis J. Magner of Highwood who takes possession next Sunday. He was selected from the several candi- dates who took the qualifying exam- inations last week. He succeeds the late Father Hugh P. Smyth and be- comes the third pastor St. Mary's has had in its sixty-three years. Fr. Magner is well known in Chi- cago and on the North Shore where he has spent all but a few years of the time since his ordination to the priest- hood in 1913, He comes to St. Mary's from St. James church in Highwood, his first pastorate, which he has held since October, 1924. Previously he had been assistant to Msgr. Francis Kelley, now Bishop of Oklahoma, at St. Francis Xavier church in Wilmette. Helped Build School At both parishes he carried on his work in a manner which meant a great deal in his gaining the appointment to St. Mary's. While at St. Francis Xavier his duties were heavy, as Msgr. Kelley was at that time presi- dent of the Catholic Church Extension society, and he was accredited with an important part in the building of the school in connection with St. Francis Xavier which took place during his time as assistant there. In Highwood within three years he has succeeded in building a new church and school in connection. Fr. Magner was born in Wilmington, Ill, where his father, James Magner, still lives. He is of a family of which several members are in religious life. Fr. Magner's younger brother was or- dained last April, having been one of the members of the first class at Mun- delein. He is now studying in Rome at the Canadian college. Fr.
