Firemen Extinguish Blaze in Newly Erected Garage A beaver board covering over a newly-made cement garage floor at- tached to the new residence being erected on Church road near Center street, was discovered on fire by Ser- geant Ed Cummings and Patrolman Carl Bishop of the local police last Saturday morning, at 1:30 o'clock. M,, 3 2 . = - - 8 v Woman's Club Has Delightful Program of Christmas Music Those who did not find the oppor- tunity nor have the inclination to go to the Woman's club on Tuesday af- ternoon of this week, missed one of the most delightful programs that it ever has been the writer's privilege to hear at that club. The program was in charge of Mrs. Harry Street, a member of the music committee of the Winnetka Woman's club, and was given by the Winnetka Music club. The club room was most effectively decorated with Christmas trees and lighted candles, which made a beautiful setting for the musicale. The program opened with a two- piano number, arranged for eight hands. This was the Hallelujah chorus from "The Messiah," by Handel, and it was played by Miss Clara Harsh, Mrs. Roland Whitman, Mrs. Percival Hunter, and Mrs. Arthur Dean. It was well played and was greatly en- joyed by the audience who, however, had been asked not to applaud until the end of the entire program. This was followed by the entrance of the members of the Winnetka Music club, singing a Christmas carol. The rest of the afternoon was given over to the singing of many Christmas carols and songs, some by the entire group, several by a trio composed of Mrs. Warner Robinson, Mrs. George Frazer, and Mrs. John Hansel, and one quartet by Mrs, Robinson, Mrs. Fraz- er, Mrs. Hansel, and Mrs. J. Mission Board Asks U. S. Policy Change in China Three members of the Winnetka Congregational church were in Boston last week presenting to the Prudential Committee of the American Board of Missions the resolution recently passed by the Congregational church of Winnetka asking that body to seek the co-operation of other missionary boards in requesting the State depart- ment so to modify its policy that mis- sionaries in the inland parts of China who desire to do their work only with diplomatic protection and entirely without military protection may be al- lowed to do so. The church was rep- resented by Stanley S. Simpson, Wil- liam Ayer McKinney and the Rev. Paul R. Reynolds. Some reports of the result of this conference may be looked for in a short time, it is said. New Trier Debate Teams Prepare for Busy Year A meeting of the New Trier High school debating team was held at the home of Jeanne Baumgartl, 1180 Oak- ley avenue, Hubbard Woods, Monday, December 19. The question for the year is the McNary Haugen Bill. It was decided upon by the debating association to which New Trier belongs. The team will debate other members of this association, and also has a return debate with a Cleveland high school. As vet no debates have been held, the members now being engaged in pre- paring themselves for the debates after the holidays.
