Re December 31, 1927 WINNETKA TALK NORTH SHORE ARTISTS PREPARE FOR EXHIBIT Interest in Annual Event En- hanced by Offer of Stewart Purchase Prize When the annual exhibit of canvases by north shore artists is held at Matz hall in Community House, Winnetka, under the auspices of the North Shore Art league on January 12, it is probable that the greatest array of such works ever presented locally will be in evi- dence. Artists are finishing up their entries with the greatest speed possible in order to have them listed before January 6, the time limit set for sub- mitting paintings. Contributing to a large degree to the great interest being shown this season is the offer of a purchase prize by Wil- liam A. Stewart of 620 Cherry street, Winnetka, which is to be known as the Loraine Miller Stewart Purchase prize. The purpose underlying the offer of the prize is to stimulate the populari- zation of the purchase of pictures. In submitting their canvases, artists are asked to indicate whether or not they desire to compete for the Loraine Mil- ler Stewart prize. The awards made under the prize offer will be accorded under the direction of a jury which is to be selected to choose the winning exhibits. Exhibit Opens January 12 Arrangements for the exhibit are being made under the supervision of the members of the Art league board of which James Cady Ewell of Ravi- nia is president. The opening of the event will be featured by a reception at 8 o'clock on the evening of Wednes- day, January 12, which will also include music and refreshments. At a recent meeting of the league it was voted to award 4 prizes for the best posters made by High school stu- dents announcing the exhibit. A jury consisting of Mrs. Marguerite Calkins Taylor and Mrs. Gordon Wilson of Wilmette, Mrs. Sibyl Vennema and Mrs. J. W. FE. Davies of Winnetka, met last Wednesday morning and awarded the prizes as follows: first, Virginia Pearson of Wilmette; second, Harriet Merrifield of Winnetka; third, M. L. R. (full name as yet not learned) and fourth, Gertrude Vink of Wilmette. To Exhibit Posters Honorable mention was also accord- ed to Jean Snell of Winnetka, Ethel- bel Harlan of Kenilworth, Edith Mag- gart of Wilmette and George Bursch of Wilmette. Twenty four students submitted posters in the contest, all of whom were from New Trier High school. The League expects to have all of the post- ers collected immediately preceding the exhibit and to have them placed on separate exhibition in a room adjacent to the regular exhibit. Kenilworth Child Hurt in Christmas Day Crash Richard O'Connor, 6 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John O'Connor, 149 Ken- ilworth avenue, Kenilworth, was one of the principals in a near-tragedy Christmas day while enjoying a ride ia a friend's new automobile. John Ellis of Chicago, who was visit- ing with the O'Connors over the holi- day, invited Richard for a short ride in his new car and the pair started off on a tour of the village. In the course of the journey Richard became intensely interested in the driv- ers levers and attachments adorning the floor boards, and, in climbing down to gain a closer view of them, inter- fered with the driver, distracting his attention from the road. Its own master for a time, the ma- chine promptly climbed a curb and at- tempted the assasination of one of Ken- ilworth's large oak trees, catapulating Richard against the side of the car with terrific force. Ellis rushed the child to the Evanston hospital for medical at- tention where it was reported that the child escaped with severe bruises.
