Then, after further amend- ment and improvement, the following resolution was carried without a dis- senting vote: "The Prudential committee has re- ceived with grateful and favorable ap- preciation an overture from the church of Winnetka, Illinois. "In response to this overture, the Prudential committee is disposed, in behalf of the American board, to pe- tition the United States Government, through the State Department, that it make it possible for the mission- aries of the American board, who de- sire to live outside the concessions, legations and 'protected areas' to be given only such diplomatic protection as may be given without the use, threat or show of military force and by such methods only as will promote good will in personal and official relations. "The Prudential committee submits this statement of its purpose to the Heraldic Artist Book Plates Crests Coats of Arms Etchings Artistic Lamp Shades Studio 17 Rapp Building Winnetka missionaries of the American board in China in order to secure their full judgment before presenting this peti- tion to the government. "The Prudential committee submits this statement of its purpose to the other mission boards of our country having work in China through the Foreign Missionary conference in the hope that these boards will join in this petition. "The committee would express its earnest sympathy with the hopes of the establishment of a stable and just gov- ernment in China and, acting for the American board, will continue to seek, through the State Department, for such speedy revision of the existing treaties with China as will contribute to better relationship between the two nations." It has been learned since that these letters were dispatched to each of the American board's missionaries in China on December 21 with request for reply by March 1. Meanwhile, the resolu- tion is being prepared for presentation to other Foreign Missions boards at the Foreign Missions conference which meets at Atlantic City in January. The presentation to the government will follow the replies from the missionaries on March 1. The courtesy and consideration with which the delegation from Winnetka was received in Boston cannot be overstated, it is explained. Time was freely given alike by secretaries and lay members of committees; a gra- cious hospitality was extended; a cor- diality that warmed every conference made the task delightful; and the or- ganization and association hallowed by memories from the first days of Ameri- can Foreign Missions made the dele- gation aware that it was standing on sacred ground. The appreciation of a visit by those of its members from a church over a thousand miles away was repeatedly expressed and beyond any doubt this carried much weight. Also the careful compilation by Mr. Simpson of helpful precedents and expert opinion was of inestimable value. It is easily possible that events will show that the Win- netka church has here taken the lead in a very significant piece of missionary and international history. At any rate its wisdom in having its resolution per- sonally presented in Boston is beyond all question.
