- wf PES LL December 31, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 37 Automobile Ranks Shawnee Club Is Ready Conserving Youth of their precious gifts. The acts of our lives that distinguish us from High Among Man's Mortal Enemies Strangely enough this is the worst season of the year for automobile ac- cidents. The death rate from this cause in the United States is nearly 25 per 100,000 population during Sept- ember, October, November and De- cember. For the remainder of the year the average is less than 20. The last two weeks in October and the first two in November are the very worst. More folks are killed by automobiles in December than in any other mounth except the other three named above. In Illinois automobiles were directly responsible for more deaths last year than typhoid fever, diphtheria, scarlet fever, whooping cough, measles, small- pox and infantile paralysis combined. These seven diseases killed a total of 1,620 persons while the toll from au- tomobile accidents reached the alarm- ing total of 1,647. Deaths due to automobiles in Illinois have jumped up from 466 in 1918 to 1,647 in 1926, an increase of 253 per cent in eight years. Only ten diseases out of the whole list that prey upon mankind result in more fatalities than mishaps with automobiles. While doctors and sanitarians are busily engaged in driving diseases from the face of the earth mankind in general is just as busy at introducing mechanisms that kill and cripple at a rate which puts to shame most of the epidemic infections. Each year the frightful toll climbs a little higher than the year before. The rate of increase in mortality from accidents just about equals the per capita increase in auto- mobile ownership. The heaviest accident toll is among folks under 15 and over 50 years old. Perhaps most of the other age groups are driving cars and thereby escape being run down so frequently. Doubt- less they are somewhat more alert mentally and physically too, than the younger and older group. Mr, and Mrs. P. B. Kohlsaat of the Orrington hotel left Tuesday evening for a short stay in Washington, D. C. to Build "English Manor" (Continued from page 36) way leads to the principal hall on the main floor. Three steps down from the stair hall is a lobby from which may be viewed a "magnificent swimming pool." The library, general club and card rooms and a billiard hall will be found on the left of the lobby. All these rooms will face the front of the structure, where they will have a fine view of the lake. Other rooms on this floor will be the office, handball courts, bowling alleys, men's and wo- men's lockers, showers, toilets and restrooms, On the floor above will be found the principal rooms, including the lounge, dining room, etc. The dining room will be a magnificent affair with wood paneling, cornices, ornamented ceiling and a stone fireplace. The lounge will be patterned after a typical drawing room of the Eng- lish manor house. The ballroom will have a high vaulted ceiling. This room, too, will be richly - ornamented. It will be connected with an open air terrace where there will be dancing outdoors during the summer. At the recent International Live Stock Exposition held in Chicago, first prize for car lots of steers was won by Aberdeen-Angus steers from Mechanicsburg, Illinois. The lecture deals with the discovery and practical use of unknown but powerful forces of childhood, and every parent who is face to face with these unseen forces will be interested in the views of a man who is putting into practice in the education of children and adults his theory that: "The creative spirit is something more than a product in word, clay or canvas: it is dancing, rhythmic living, a laugh, a flash of the mind, strength of control, swiftness of action... . something more important than a beau- tiful product is the result of cultivating the creative impulses. Personality de- velops, character emerges and with it knowledge, a kind of wisdom so sure in its judgments as to make us listen and attend rather than command and instruct. "Without exception we are all crea- tive artists though many are unaware others, those that endear us to friends, those that send other away in fear or even in disgust, these are manifesta- tions of our unique creative art, for it is by man's art alone that he holds, rules, serves and survives."
