February 25, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 33 N.T. Tankers Nose Out Fast Swimmers of Lane Tech High In an exceptionally stiff battle, Lane Tech swimmers were conquered by New Trier by a margin of three points in both the junior and senior battles, at Indian Hill last Saturday evening, the New Trier seniors coming out by |1 a 29 to 26 score, while the grey-and- green ponies were ahead of the in- vaders 22 to 19 The meet opened with the senior medley relay race, which proved to be the closest event of the meet as well as the one that clinched the lead New Trier held, despite the attempts, of the invaders to break it. The Lane lads had pulled steadily ahead of the Indian Hill men, until the final feature of the event, when Bennett of New Trier was pitted against Hellend of the Chicago school for the 100 yard dash. Hellend started ten yards ahead of the New Trier captain, but was overtaken on the fourth lap, after which Bennett breezed in to victory. The latter took the 40 yard dash, but the 100 yard freestyle event in which he had starred a few minutes before proved to be too much for him, since instead of Hellend, Robb, a man who had not been previously worn by com- petition was entered. <The 100 yard breaststroke event went to Rogers of New Trier, but the 60 yard backstroke event was dropped to Jacobson of Lane, who took this event in very fast time, 40 3-10 seconds. Don Granstrom, of the home school came first in the diving, although he beat his nearest competitor, Ander- son, by a bare two points. The 160 yard, eight lap relay, went. to Lane Tech. Roos of New Trier was the high point man of the meet, with first hon- ors in the junior 40 and 100 yard dashes. N. Swim- Maine High School Tankers to Engage New Trier Feb. 29 Coach Jackson's swimmers at New Trier high take on their next-to-the- last opponents, Wednesday afternoon, when they receive the junior and senior tankmen from Maine township high school. Maine and New Trier have long been rivals for aquatic honors, al- though the Winnetka school, because of better facilities, has usually man- aged to come out on top in the an- nual meets. Comparative scores are hard to get, since the two schools have not played in the same circuits this season, but Maine will probably send over a bunch that will keep Coach Jackson's men worried for a while, at least. Bennett, Rogers, Rich, Read, Netter- strom, Patterson, Williams, Granstrom and Enchelmeyer are to be the senior entries for New Trier, while the juniors will comprise Roos, Prussing, N. Granstrom, Springer, Zinner, Laner, Swabacker, Barnard and King. ming for Lane: Spyra, Herst, Bergwin, Sippalla. Swimming for New Trier: fing, Larner, N. Granstrom, Roos.
