Throngs of Women Attend Style Show at Store's Opening Unusual interest was evinced in the style show conducted February 20 and 21 by the Junior league of Evanston at the new apparel shop of Edgar A. Stevens, Inc., 1624 Orrington avenue, Svanston. It is estimated that more than 3,000 people were in attendance on the two days of the opening. The shop was | crowded to capacity, it became neces- sary to lock the doors at times and many witnessed the pageant from the outside. The newest creations depicting the mode for spring were shown in ap- propriate versions for daytime and eve- ning wear. meed of attention, for it is averred by stylists to be correct for practically any occasion from sun-up until sundown. Many distinctive evening gowns were shown and also tailored coats, printed frocks and luxurious negligees. Street costumes were worn with hats and proper accessories to complement them. Fashion tendencies noted in the Sports attire received its | | showing include: -- uneven hemlines, 'circular and flaring skirts, the raised waistline, the flair for tweed ensembles, | the fitted bodice, flounces and the {trend for more femininity in every i detail of dress than has been apparent { for many a season. Costume jewelry, {true to its name, matched the cos- { tumes with which it was worn. | | Among the new modes shown was {an evening gown fashioned of an im- { ported black lace shawl embellished { with vivid shades and combined with point d' esprit. It was worn by Mrs. | Arthur Rogers. Another evening gown of unusual charm was of marine blue chiffon, worn by Mrs. Leslie Wagner. The vogue of dots was exemplified in a smart dotted ensemble worn by Mrs. Wallace Thompson. Miss Marion Dawes wore a distinctive afternoon gown of black satin and chiffon. A swagger three-piece tweed ensemble was modeled by Mrs. Mitchell Harper. Miss Dawes, vice-president of the Junior league, had charge of the exhi- bition. Mrs. Edgar A. Stevens, who is buyer of coats, gowns and ensembles for the shop, selected the garments shown. VILLAGE OF WINNETKA NOTICE Winnetka, Illinois, February 25, 1928. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that sealed bids for the improvement of WESTMOOR ROAD (formerly known as Fig Street) from and connecting with the existing pavement at the west line extend- ed of Rosewood Avenue, west to and con- necting with the existing macadam pave- ment in Hibbard Road, at a line thirteen (13) feet west of and parallel with the east line extended of said Hibbard Road, including street returns at Laurel Ave- nue and Burr Avenue as far north as the north line extended of said West- moor Road (formerly known as Fig Street) by grading, clearing, preparing the subgrade, draining, handraking the parkways, constructing brick masonry manhole-catchbasins with cast iron cov- ers, constructing culverts, and paving with boiler cinders a sixteen (16) foot roadway in said Westmoor Road (former- ly known as Fig Street), except at the street intersections of said Westmoor Road with Laurel Avenue, Burr Avenue and Hibbard Road, where the said pave- ment shall be widened along curved lines having radii of twenty-five (25) feet, all within the Village of Winnetka, County of Cook and State of Illinois, said im- provement and assessment being other- wise known as Winnetka Special Assess- ment No. 463,985 in accordance with the ordinance heretofore passed therefor, will be received by the Board of Local Im- provements of the Village of Winnetka by or before eight o'clock P. M., on Tues- day, the sixth day of March, A. D. 1928, at which hour all bids will be opened at a meeting to be held in the Council Chamber of the Village Hall, in the Vil- lage of Winnetka, Cook County, Illinois. The specifications of said improve- ment are on file in the office of the Clerk of said Village of Winnetka. _ Contractors will be paid in bonds bear- ing interest at the rate of five (5) per centum per annum for all estimates ap- proved by the Board of Local Improve- ments in the sum of One Hundred Dol- lars (100.00) and over and when the amount of balance due on any estimate is less than the sum of One Hundred Dollars ($100.00), the same will be paid by time warrants. The Village of Win- netka will furnish, without cost to the contractor, an approving opinion of Cole- man, Sexton & Chandler upon the bonds to be issued. In addition to the usual bond for construction and maintenance in the sum equal to the amount of the bid accepted by the Board of Local Improvements, the successful bidder will be required to furnish an indemnity and defense policy in some reliable company, indemnifying the Village of Winnetka against loss from liability for damages on account of injury or death suffered by reason of the performance of the work required to be performed by the said contractor, by any person or persons, including such liability imposed under the employers' liability and workmen's compensation law of the State of Illinois and the amendments thereof, in the sum of Ten Thousand Dollars ($10,000.00) for injury or death of any one person, nor less. than Twenty Thousand = Dollars ($20,000.00) for injury or death to more than one person in any one accident. TH51-1te NOTICE Village of Winnetka SUPERIOR COURT OF COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS. GENERAL NUMBER VILLAGE OF WINNETKA, a Municipal Corporation, VS. CATHERINE E. MURPHY, AND ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN. THE SUPERIOR COURT OF COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS, by order duly en- tered in the above entitled proceedings, having directed that as to such defend- ants as are shown by the affidavit filed in said proceedings, to be non-residents of the State of Illinois, or whose resi- dences are shown thereby to be unknown, and the defendants designated as "All whom it may concern," the Clerk of said Court cause publication to be made in the Winnetka Talk, a secular newspaper published in the Village of Winnetka, County of Cook and State of Illinois, containing notice of the following mat- ters: Notice is hereby given of the pendency of the above entitled proceedings insti- tuted by the petition of the Village of Winnetka, heretofore filed in the Superior Court of Cook County, Illinois, designated General Number 470218 in said Court, praying for the ascertainment of the just compensation to be made for the private property to be taken or damaged for the making of the improvement here- inafter described, and for the ascertain- ment of what property will be benefited IN THE 470218 by the making of said improvement, and the amount of such benefit. The Commissioners duly appointed by the said Superior Court of Cook County, illinois, to investigate and report the just compensation to be made for the private property to be taken or damaged for said improvement, and also what real estate will be benefited by said improvement, and the amount of such benefit to each parcel of land assessed, duly made a spe- cial assessment to raise the cost of such improvement, and filed their said report and assessment roll in the office of the Clerk of the Superior Court of said Cook County, on the tenth day of February, A. D. 1928. Thereupon a summons issued out of said Court against the defendants above named, and the defendants described as "All whom it may concern," returnable in said Court at the County Court House in the City of Chicago, County of Cook and State of Illinois, on the twelfth day of March, A. D. 1928, as is by law re- quired, which proceeding is now pending. The total cost of said improvement, as shown by the estimate of the President of the Board of Local Improvements of the said Village of Winnetka, and the report and assessment roll of said Com- missioners, is the sum of Thirteen Thousand, Five Hundred Sixty-two Dollars and fifty-five cents ($13,562.55). Now unless you, such defendants as are shown by the affidavit filed in said proceedings to be non-residents of the State of Illinois, or whose residences are shown thereby to be unknown, and the defendants designated as '""All whom it may concern," shall be and appear be- fore the said Superior Court of Cook County, Illinois, at the County Court House, in the City of Chicago, County of Cook and State of Illinois, on the twelfth day of March, A. D. 1928, and plead, answer or demur to the petitioner's petition, or object to the report and assessment roll of the Commissioners aforesaid, the same and the matters and things therein charged and stated will be taken as confessed, and a judgment entered in accordance with the said re- port and assessment roll and the prayer of said petition. The following is a description of the said improvement, and includes a de- scription of the lots, blocks, tracts and parcels of land sought to be taken for the said improvement. That Locust Street be widened by con- demning therefor the West Thirty-three . (33) feet of that part lying south of the south line of Westmoor Road (also known as Fig Street) of Lot Twenty-six (26) in the County Clerk's Division of that part of the Southeast Quarter of Section Seventeen (17) in Township Forty-two (42) North, Range Thirteen (13) East of the Third Principal Meri- dian, lying west of the Railway, accord- ing to the plat of said County Clerk's Di- vision recorded in the office of the Re- corder of Cook County, Illinois, on the thirtieth day of April, A. D. 1878, in Book 13 of Plats at Page 82, as Docu- ment Number 178377, and that when so widened, said Locust Street shall be im- proved as follows: ® Beginning at and connecting with the existing brick pavement in Pine Street; thence north in said Locust Street, to and connecting with the existing con- crete pavement in said Locust Street at the south line extended of Starr Road; also from and connecting with said exist- ing concrete pavement in said Locust Street at the north line extended of said Starr Road to and connecting with the existing concrete pavement in said Locust Street at the south line extended of Dins- more Road; also from and connecting with said existing concrete pavement in said Locust Street at the north line ex- tended of said Dinsmore Road, to and connecting with the existing asphaltic concrete pavement in Westmoor Road; by clearing, grubbing, excavating, trench- ing, backfilling the trenches, grading. preparing the subgrade to receive the macadam pavement and sod edge, grad- ing, rolling and hand-raking parkways, adjusting existing manhole and catch basin - covers, constructing tile pipe drains, placing sod edge along each side of the proposed pavement, constructing a macadam pavement with tarvia wear- ing surface, the center line of which shall be the center line of the street in which it. is located. The width of said pave- ment shall be eighteen (18) feet, except at the street corners of Pine Street and Westmoor Road, where the pavement shall be widened along curved lines, con- vex toward the center of the proposed pavement; the radii for said curved lines being twenty-five (25) feet; including removal of two (2) trees on the west side of said Locust Street at Pine Street, adjusting present brick pavement at Pine Street, and macadam pavement at Westmoor Road, removal of combined curb and gutter at said Pine Street and said Westmoor Road, adjusting existing sidewalk approaches, constructing new sidewalk approaches, and the removal of all surplus materials and rubbish, all within the Village of Winnetka, County of Cook and State of Illinois.
