March 17, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 25 SUBURBAN BUILDING SHOWS SLIGHT GAIN First two Months of 1928 Indi- cate 8 Percent Gain Over January, February 1927 Chicago suburban building for the opening months of this year show an 8 per cent gain over the same period a year ago. The indication, according to the building permit index, is that building will continue active for the next sixty to ninety days. For the first two months of 1928, the twenty-seven principal suburbs for which comparative records are avail- able showed a volume, according to official permits issued, of $12,794,545 as compared with $11,834,613 for the first two months of 1927. Many in Gain Column Although the suburbs are sustaining a high volume of proposed building as a whole, numerous losses are apparent for February, according to the build- ing survey department of S. W. Straus and company. In February the twenty- seven suburbs with comparable records had a construction volume of $5,585,515 as against $6,584,584 for February last vear, or a loss of 15 per cent. As against January 1928 the February record this year showed a loss of 23 percent. Oak Park, Joliet and Hammond of the larger suburbs made record gains last month as against a year ago. Oak Park made a February gain of 313 per cent and 124 per cent gain over Janu- ary this year. Its traditional rival, Ev- anston, took losses in both the Febru- ary and January comparisons. Ham- mond made gains while its neighbor- ing rival, Gary, showed a negative po- sition. Other suburbs making gains last month as against a year ago were: Aurora, 7 per cent; Chicago Heights, 106 per cent; Cicero, 13 per cent; Elgin, 10 per cent; Glencoe, 18 per cent; Glen Ellyn, 56 per cent; Harvey, 122 per cent; Joliet, 126 per cent: La Grange, 11 per cent; Lake Forest, 17 per cent; Park Ridge, 82 per cent: Waukegan, 4 per cent; Wilmette 5 per cent and Hammond, 96 per cent. The suburbs making losses in Febru- ary compared with February last year weres Berwyn, 31 per cent; Des Plaines, 66 per cent; Evanston, 51 per cent; Highland Park, 42 per cent: Lombard, 71 per cent; Maywood, 35 per cent; Niles Center, 42 per cent: Wheaton, 63 per cent; Winnetka, 45 per cent; East Chicago, 38 per cent; Whiting, 73 per cent and Gary, 76 per cent, Record Large Gains Gains in February compared with January this year were as follows: Aurora, 103 per cent; Blue Island, 85 per cent; Cicero, 644 per cent; Elgin, 53 per cent; Forest Park, 3237 per cent; Glencoe, 106 per cent; Harvey, 300 per cent; Joliet, 373 per cent: La Grange, 29 per cent; Maywood, 83 per cent; Niles Center, 85 per cent; North Chicago, 12,082 per cent; Oak Park, 124 per cent; Park Ridge, 186 per cent; Wilmette, 179 per cent; East Chicago, 233 per cent and Gary, 20 per cent. Suburbs suffering losses in February compared with January this year were: Berwyn, 10 per cent; Des Plaines, 38 per cent; Evanston, 54 per cent; Geneva, 45 per cent: Glen Ellyn, 47 per cent; Highland Park, 39 per cent; Lake Forest, 71 per cent; Lom- bard, 47 per cent; Waukegan, 65 per cent; Wheaton, 5 per cent; Winnetka, 68 per cent; Hammond, 80 per cent and Whiting, 99 per cent.
