March 17, 1928 WINNETKA TALK Wilmette Cagers Annex Title in North Shore Play The Wilmette Lightweight grammar school basketball team clenched the North Shore league championship last Saturday when it won from the Ken- ilworth basketball team 14 to 9. The team had previously defeated Haven and Boltwood lightweight teams twice each. The North Shore Athletic league provides for Grammar school leagues in football, and basketball, in the three towns, Evanston, Wilmette and Ken- ilworth. Three teams are entered in the league from each school system providing for boys under 90 pounds, boys under 110 pounds, and boys 110 pounds and over. The Peewee team or boys under 90 pounds won one of their six games and thus far the Heavyweight team has been defeated once with only one game with Kenilworth to be played off in the near future. Members of the championship lightweight team are: Frank Church, Colin Finlayson, Cecil Williams, George Eber, Hugh Saxon, and Alfred Zibble. The team was coached by Dudley C. Stone. Wilmette Girl in Class for Honors in English Independent study for honors in English, long advocated by leading educators as a solution to the prob- lems of "machine education," is being given a trial at Northwestern universi- ty. A selected group of students, all juniors, have been chosen as the nucleus of the first "honors" group to do independent study under supervi- sion of the English department. The first work in the program is a study of Greek prose and drama and is being supervised by J. W. Spargo and Garrett Mattingly, who are both eminently qualified for work in this field. As the students progress in their study from section to section other instructors, specialists in a certain por- tion of the subject, will be assigned to supervise the course. In this manner, the students are given the advantage of contact with the best minds in the department and with men who are most able in their certain fields. Miss Catherine Moore, 1203 Ash- land avenue, Wilmette, is one of the pioneer candidates in the honors course in English. Winnetkan Wins Honor in Cornell Senior Class J. B. Mordock of 645 Maple avenue, Winnetka, has been appointed to the Senior Ball committee at Cornell uni- versity, according to an announcement made last night by L. P. Seiler, presi- dent of the Student council. Appoint- ment to this important student commit- tee is rated as one of the choicest undergraduate honors because it is a mark of recognition of a student's popularity, The Senior Ball commit- tee has complete charge of all arrange- ments for the traditional dance which is a part of the Commencement Week festivities.
