UNIV. 5712 "SHAKEN BY THE WIND" "Shaken by the Wind," the strange and almost terrifying tale of a colony of fanatics, founded on fact and told by Ray Starchey, receives enthusiastic praise from Bernard De Voto, who has made a study of many of the early re- ligious movements in America and has himself written a powerful novel on a similiar subject--"The Chariot of Fire." Mr. De Voto says: " 'Shaken by the Wind' is a fine and honest book. The author's understanding of the motives at work and of the peculiar psychology of religious ecstasy is very fine. It's a job to be proud of." Ihe Sn Belt Cony, Milwaukee chandise service a valuable aid t i Mr. J. A. I-11 Here's Hints for Looking Over Car as Spring Arrives Spring and clean-up are companion words in the vocabulary of motorists who anticipate real service from their automobiles during the current tour- ing season. A bulletin prepared by the Mechanical First Aid department of the Chicago Motor club gives a condensed list of principal matters that should be given attention. "Overhaul the cooling system. If rust scale is abundant, flush radiator and cylinder block with a weak solu- tion of soda or lye, then rinse with clear water. Inspect hoses, replacing flabby or loose connections. "Change engine oil. "Remove oil pan, scape and clean with gasoline and dry thoroughly be- fore replacing. "Inspect all bearings, particularly in wheels. "Inspect transmission and axle hous- ings, cleaning and re-greasing. "Test steering gear and wheels for misalignment. "Clean terminals on battery and be sure battery and box are in good condition, "Check tires and rims, eradicating rust and caked mud. "Check gasoline distribution system for possible leaks and if possible use compressed air to clean gas lines. "Adjust carburetor to give leaner mixture. "File and adjust breaker points and other electrical contacts, including those in generator and starter. See that generator is not overcharging. "Replace defective or darkened light globes and polish reflectors. "Wash car thoroughly, being careful to eliminate caked grease and mud." Get Dope on the Roads Before That Spring Tour With advent of Spring, motoring difficulties are manifold; dirt roads are softened from winter snows and rains; from alternate freezing and thawing; and highway contractors are beginning construction programs which will eventually result in many miles of new roads, but, which will bring inconven- ience and perhaps discomfiture while under way, points out a bulletin issued by the touring bureau of the Chicago Motor club. Detours appear in un- expected places, great piles of stone are strewn in the middle of the road, and roads that were familiar last fall are an unchartered sea to the unin- formed tourist. When planning a trip at this time of year, it is highly important to secure accurate, up-to-date information on road conditions. The motorist who will observe this precaution will save himself much anoyance and disappoint- ment and possibly expense, Invite Residents to Hear Noted Child Psychologist Residents of the north shore are in- vited to hear a lecture by Dr. Alfred Adler, distinguished Vienna psycholo- gist, who is to speak at the Elm place school auditorium, Highland Park, Monday evening, April 9, at 8 o'clock. His subject will be, "The problems of Life as Social Problems." Dr. Adler occupies a high position in Vienna as a psychologist, and one who is especially interested in the guidance and understanding of young children. He has established twenty-two clinics in Vienna where his teachers are trained to understand children and the problems of the normal, as well as abnormal child. FIRST AUTO REGISTRATION New York was the first state to enact a motor vehicle registration law according to reports received by the Chicago Motor club. It was adopted in 1901.
