April 28, 1928 WINNETKA TALK GUILD STAGE SETTINGS DONE IN LATEST MODE Fred C. Rothermell, Noted New York Designer, Retained for "Tons of Money" Sets North shore art critics are being treated this week and next to some- thing unusual in the way of modern stage lighting and scene designing. In a setting characterized by re- straint and clear-cut directness, Fred C. Rothermell, New York designer and artist, has given the North Shore Theater guild's final play, "Tons of Money," a distinguished touch of ar- tistry. His color schemes and arrange- ment present a highly effective com- bination of a blue, blue-green and silver background, with furniture in vermillion, black and silver. Mr. Rothermell has studied stage design under the famous Norman Bel-Gedder, and color and design un- der Rudolph Schaeffer. He began his work in San Francisco, later going to New York where his modern window backgrounds for Saks and company, on Fifth avenue, attracted wide atten- tion. This spring Mr. Rothermell came to Chicago, where he was secured as modern art advisor for the Almco galleries. It is through the courtesy of the Almco galleries, supplying the furniture, drapes and lamps used in the present Theater guild production, that Mr. Rothermell was sent to the north shore to assist the guild's de- signers. Modern Decoration Thus it is that the guild has at- tempted to select the best and most representative examples from the great flurry of modern art that has raged through the country. The setting of "Tons of Money" shows how the modern interior decorator approaches | his task. "Too much so-called modern art," says Mr. Rothermell, "fails to achieve the spirit of the movement and is simply 'valentinistic." The imitator of the modernists fails to be simple and practical. "The sooner the gingerbread is cut out, the sooner we will have begun to produce something that is consistent and in keeping with the purpose of the movement. Unessentials that do not express the symbol represented in the design must be cast out." All the furniture and lamps to be seen in the guild production were de- signed and manufactured by the Almco galleries. In Wilmette May 1 "Tons of Money" began its current tour in Glencoe on April 24, and will appear at Shawnee club, Wilmette, May 1, and end in Evanston, at the Woman's club, on May 2 and 3, cover- ing all intermediate points. Mother Nature Often Needs Help Assisting Mother Nature in beautifying estates and home grounds has been our work in this community for many years. The artistic touch of the professional landscape artist added to what Mother Nature has already accomplished results in views and scenes of unequalled beauty. We will consider it a privilege to consult with those interested in beautifying their grounds. harlesFiore: C 2 RRL OTS IN Landscape Gardening Prairie Avenue, Highwood, Illinois Telephone Highland Park 523 Now For Fun and Gymnastics in Your Yard Buy An Out-O-Door Gym Set Up!
