Edward John- son was scheduled to open the season, but sudden illness compelled him to postpone his appearance to the last concert. Matzenauer, who had been scheduled to close the series, kindly substituted for him. The young Rus- sian pianist, Alexander Brailowsky, fulfilled all the expectations of those who had heard him with the Chicago Symphony. Albert Spaulding made such an impression that we are having him back again next season. This was the year Dusalina Giannini gave a song recital. As I said before, Edward Johnson closed the season--and in a blaze of glory. Our third season opened most au- spiciously with a song recital by the great favorite, Tito Schipa. This was followed by the appearance of Ce- cilia Hansen, violinist. One of the high lights of the season was the piano recital by Madame Novaes, who en- deared herself to everyone. The Eng- lish singers appeared with great suc- cess, and we ended the season with a song recital by Madame Kerenka, Russian coloratura soprano. Close Brilliant Season The season just .closed is undoubtedly fresh in your minds. Nevertheless, let us add to our already long list of il- lustrous names Sophie Braslau. While not pleasing to everyone, she is none the less a great artist. She is the only one who had the honor this past year of singing with Toscannini. Wanda Lan- dowska gave a most delightful pro- gram of ancient music on that ancient instrument, the harpsichord. This was a joint recital with Nina Morgana as the assisting artist. Our third concert brought us up against a new kind of difficulty, in that it was found necessary to change the date of Heinrich Schlusnus' recital. Annual Oratorical Contest After much recasting of votes the decisions have finally been made, as to the students chosen for the finals of the oratorical contest at New Trier. The contest is held in the public speak- ing classes, and the winners are chosen by vote of the class, and Miss Mable Payton, instructor. Out of the two advanced public speaking classes, the following have been selected for the finals; Steve Harwood, Elmer Rich, Henry Brooks, David Wanger, Bill Hughes, and Herma Logan. Outside of the classes, Rollin Simmons is the only remaining contestant. In two weeks, these seven students will compete for the first place in the contest, the winner of which receives a cup, to be kept for one year.
