Michigan Avenue Superior 1855 SS EN ------) New Trier Players to Present Noyes' Drama, "Sherwood" By M. B. Just as no tale of Robin Hood would be complete without an account of his love for the poor, so would it be incomplete without showing how he often risked himself to help his com- rades. In "Sherwood," Alfred Noyes has taken many of the myths sur- rounding the life of Robin and worked them into the play. Beginning at the point of his banishment, the play deals with many of the characters and the incidents that are associated with him. Will Scarlet has been condemned to die by being hanged. Disguised as an old man, Robin offers to kill him by -- | his own bow, in the absence of the hangman, with three shots. Instead of doing that, he uses the shots to cut the rope that binds Will, and to kill one of the guards; then, under the protection of his merry men, and with the aid of a strange Black Knight, Will is taken back to the forest. Prince John is not alone in his de- sire to harm Robin. His mother, Queen Elinor, plots with her son to bring sorrow and unhappiness to Robin and Lady Marian. After Marian has followed her lover to the forest, Queen Elinor in turn pursues her and tries vainly to kill her; but she is saved by her quick-footed little fool, Shadow-of-a-Leaf. Again, later in the play, it is this same Shadow-of-a-Leaf who. helps Robin to escape from the cell into which John has thrown him. John has his men seal up the wall, thinking in this way to do away with him and be ususpected, Robin Hood escapes, but is wounded, and the fol- lowing day in Sherwood forest, he is found to be gravely ill. The only thing that can be done is to take Robin to a convent where the Prioress is noted for her skill in treat- ing with herbs. Here he is taken to be cured; however, Queen Elinor has come just before him, and, pretending to the Prioress that she intends to help him, she is left with him. She finally obtains her vengeance by bleed- ing him to death. By the time Lady Marian arrives, Robin is near death. Alone and unprotected, Marian falls easily into. Elinor's trap. She stabs Marian and leaves the convent. The play is a serious one, and rather a large undertaking for high school students, but the cast is in the capable hands of the Players.
