June 16, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 15 NORTH SHORE STUDENTS AMONG U. OF I. GRADS President David Kinley Presents Diplomas to Large Class at State University At the commencement exercises last Wednesday morning at the University of Illinois, eleven north shore students were presented with degrees by David Kinley, president of the university. Wilmette students who were gradu- ated are: Gertrude Brown, George William Gauger, Evert Nelson, Alice Jane O'Connell, Robert Crockett Reed, and Elizabeth Laura Reichmann. Maxine Stewart Lill of Kenilworth and Walter Shattuck, Jr.,, formerly of Kenilworth ; Elizabeth Stutson of Win- netka; Jessica West, Hubbard Woods; and Robert Whitaker, Jr., Glencoe, were other students. Gertrude Brown is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Brown, 945 Michigan avenue, Wilmette. Miss Brown was picked as one of 23 women who has led university activities during the past four years. She is a member of Delta Gamma sorority, Torch, Shi- Ai, and Gamma Alpha Chi, a profes- sional advertising sorority for women. She was assistant circulation manager of The Daily Illini, senior Illinae pres- ident, and president of her sorority during her senior year. Evert Nelson is a member of Zeta Psi, Scull and Crescent, and Tribe of Illini. He was on the football team in his senior year. Walter Shattuck, Jr., was graduated in Civil Engineering. He is a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, the Tribe of Illini, and Dolphins, honorary swim- mers' organization. He received letters from his work on the swimming team in his sophomore, junior, and senior years. Jessica Dawson West is a member of Kappa Sigma Tau, Athenian and Gregorian literary societies, Curtain and Bell. During her junior and senior years she was a regular contributor to the poetry department of The Illinois Magazine. Elizabeth Stutson is a member of Sigma Kappa, Mortarboard, Theta Sigma Phi, Torch, and Shi-Ai. She was woman's editor of The Daily Illini, vice-president of Student Coun- cil, chairman of the annual Matrix Table banquet, and president of her sorority during her senior year. She also was chosen, as one of the 23 prominent women on the campus, and was graduated in Journalism. Robert Whitaker, Jr., was graduated in Civil Engineering. He is a member of the Cavalry club, Chi Epsilon, Scah- bard and Blade, and Sigma Tau. He was a member of the Military Bail committee and a Lieutenant-colonel of the University Brigade of the R.O.T.C. Elect Wav Thompson to Head New Trier T. N. T. The new officers of T. N. T. (The New Trier) at New Trier High school for the coming year are: Way Thomp- son, president; Martha FEtzbach, vice president, and Elizabeth Parker, secre- tary. This organization is composed of students at the high school who have shown all-round ability in the various school activities, and membership in it is considered the highest honor within the gift of the school. T. N. T. stands for the Latin words tenens, nobiles, and friums, meaning tenacity, nobility, and triumph. Mrs. J. Milton Coulter, 1065 Chat- field road. left this week for a three weeks' visit with friends in New Vork. Virginia and 'Ann are with Mrs. Coul- ter"s parents in Princeton. The Lions Might Have Best Time After All In reference to the Boy Scouts who are being sent to Africa as guests of George Palmer Putnam and David Binney Putnam, a letter comes from Tanganyika, written by Martin John- son, author of "Safari." "You can assure the Boy Scouts that they are going to have the great- est time of their lives. Osa and I will wander around this country for hundreds of miles during the next two and a half months, and have the best camp site selected. Then, when I know the date your boys are to arrive, I will return to Nairobi, get the boys, and come right out with them. I will supply them with guns and everything they need. All they need to bring will be their clothing. "We will take the best of care of them . .. Osa and I think we are go- ing to have a better time out of their visit than they will, for we will cer- tainly get a big kick in showing them the greatest time boys ever had." Miss Florence Burnham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Newton Burnham, has returned from the University of Wisconsin and is a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley J. Huddle of 794 Rosewood avenue, for a few days until the re- turn of Carol Lou Burnham, who has been attending commencement festivi- ties at Dartmouth as the guest of friends. Byrum, 791 Walden road, and her two sons, left Saturday, June 9, for Ohio, to be the guests of Mrs. Byrum's parents. Mr. Byrum will join his family later and they will be away about a month, taking a number of motor trips in the east. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Yates Hoff- man, 921 Pine street, entertained eight guests Tuesday at a dinner bridge in honor of Mr. Hoffman's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Hoff- man of New York, who are their house guests this week, and who will go from Winnetka to Springfield to visit friends, --_--0-- Miss Dorothy Dickinson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Dickinson of 1228 Scott avenue, has returned from Smith college for the summer.
