June 16, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 23 TEACH PLAY WRITING Town and Gown Project to Model Class After "47" Workshop With the ambition to develop at Northwestern university a dramatic workshop, similar to the famous "47" workshop, originated at Harvard, the Town and Gown project sponsored by the university and Drama club of Ev- anston will be elaborated next season. The appointment of Mrs. Charlotte Chorpenning, playwright and stage di- rector, as director of the playshop, which has been operated at the uni- versity for the last several years, is regarded as a signal step forward in this advance of Evanston's outstand- ing little theater movement. The new course will be modeled after the famous dramatic workshop of Prof. George Baker, now of Yale, formerly of Harvard. Mrs. Chorpen- ning was a pupil of Prof. Baker, and in the playshop, plays written by stu- dents in the classes conducted by Prof. Theodore B. Hinckley, will be produced under the personal direc- tion of Mrs. Chorpenning. Two courses in playwriting will be given--- one for beginners and one for ad- vanced students. There will be an additional class of Town and Gown project students. Three original plays written in the classes will be produced by the playshop each year, and it is expected to offer three for public pro- duction by some stock company. "The Undercurrent," the play which won first prize in the recent amateur contest of the Chicago Drama league at the Goodman theater, written in the playshop here, will be presented st the Palace theater, Chicago, June 24. Christian Science "God the Preserver of Man" was the subject of the lesson-sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, Sunday, June 10. The golden text was from Psalms 94:22, "The Lord is my defense; and my God is the rock of my refuge." Among the citations which comprised the lesson-sermon was the following from the Bible: "The Lord is thy keeper : the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore" (Psalms*121:5:7,'8). The lesson-sermon also included the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "The history of Chris- tianity furnishes sublime proofs of the supporting influence and protecting power bestowed on man by his heaven- ly Father, omnipotent Mind, who gives man faith and understanding whereby to defend himself, not only from temp- tation, but from bodily suffering" {p- 387).
