RE A -- EE Ge -- oes eng -- 42 WINNETKA TALK August 25, 1928 Chevrolet Is Given Weather House Test; Equipment Is New General Motors Proving Ground, the 1245 acre outdoor laboratory near Mil- ford, Mich., where cars are accurately measured to find out their performance ability, has in response to a demand for greater accuracy, added a weather house to its many ingenious scientific checking devices. Adapted, like so many of its com- panion devices at the Proving Ground, to the sole task of evaluating precisely and impartially all makes of automo- biles, the weather house is, perhaps, the only one of its kind in the world. It is unique, in that it includes in its complete equipment, probably the only wind velocity indicator in operation outside of the U. S. Navy. It has been in use for several weeks, and is now operating day and night under the direction of skilled met- eorologists. Here is a hypothetical instance of the manner in which the weather house assists the engineer in the precise task of measuring the automomile's merit: The Chevrolet engineering division, in checking back on the performance of one of its models, might find that on May 9 its gasoline production ex- ceeded slightly that of the preceding days. It might be found, too, that a little more water was required for the radiator and that fluctuations were noted in the speed. The Chevrolet engineers will set out to find the cause of these variations. They call upon the weather recorder. In checking back with the graphic weather records, the engineers might find that the wind velocity varied on May 9 between six and ten miles an hour. On May 8 and May 10 it re- mained below five miles an hour throughout the day. Thus the engin- Hostnick in New Mexico; Fine Trip in a Cadillac Andy Hostnick, north shore Cadil- lac salesman for many years, and Mrs. Hostnick are vacationing in the far west, according to word received from Albuquerque, N. In like manner they are able to tell ex- actly what effect the sunshine, rain, humidity or snow had to do with per- formance fluctuations on any given hour of any given day. They arrived yes- terday and in the salesrooms of the Cadillac Motor Car company on Ridge avenue, Evanston, there appeared two of the latest models which it is claimed are the supreme achievement in motive car building. To the Cadillac of the past there has been added increased provision for safety, and at the same time a more powerful car has been built. The new car is a 90 degree, V-type with 8 cyl- inder engine, and a silent driver. It has the Cadillac-LaSalle Duplex Mechan- ical system of four wheel brakes. There are two significant changes in outer appearance. The parking lights have been removed from the cowl and mounted far forward on the fenders. All exterior bright parts, radi- ator case, bumpers, lamps, door han- dles, and cowl band are chromium plated nickel. Other features of the newest models are the new Syncro-Mesh, silent shift transmission; security plate glass, which removes the hazard of flying glass fragments; adjustable front seats; pneumatic control in chassis and body engineering, assuring maximum si- ence. The new LaSalle closed car bodies are larger and more comfortable, due to a lengthened wheelbase.
