The atmosphere of the old English or Elizabethan libraries is in the hall, coupled with the comforts of the pres- ent day. Around the walls are shelves filled with books unused in library service. Old favorites predominate. The reader will not be compelled to confine himself to these books, but can take out a book from the library above in the regular way, if he de- sires. The hall will he open for adults only whenever the library is open. Very simple rules have been formulat- ed in view of the freedom from re- straint and supervision that will sur- round the reader. As far as we know, no library of this type and size has such a retreat, and it is hoped that all our library's adult subscribers will not only become acquainted with the hall, but in its use help demonstrate that such a spot in our community, free from supervision, can be equally free from those abuses that exist in the big cities.
