Hardware 546 Center St. Phone 999 Strong Winds Fan Skokie Fire Into Big Conflagration The picturesque Skokie staged a spectacular celebration Wednesday evening following the announcement of the North Shore Mosquito Abate- ment district, on Tuesday, that it had, on that day, terminated its mosquito warfare for this season. A large area of the Skokie, from Winnetka avenue to Willow road and extending westward from Hibbard road almost to the river branch, was the scene of a great conflagration ear- ly Wednesday evening. The fire at- tracted hundreds of motorists whose cars lined both Willow and Hibbard roads for blocks, while the occupants "enjoyed" the spectacle. High wind prevailing at the time swept the flames northward at a rate equalling the prairie fires of old. Carl Miller, proprietor of the Win- netka Furniture company's store, lo- cated at 1500-02 Willow road, just east of the river branch, speat another night's vigil at his store to guard against an advance of the flames upon the building. Large areas north of him have burned out during the past two weeks, he said, and recent fires to the south and west had about cleared the Skokie, with the exception of the vast area which was swept clean Wednesday evening. As the blaze began to show signs of abating, Mr. Miller heaved a sigh of relief, declaring, "well, it will soon be over now for another year."
