Pi HIE AA ET r-------- November 17, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 51 Two Methods Solve Painted Furniture Decoration Problem Decoration of the painted furniture is a problem for the painter to face. The easiest method of decoration is to use color medallions. Some of these are pasted on the furniture and covered with shellac. Others are transfer designs which are put onto the furniture itself. Decoration such as this gives the furniture a profes- sional look which is a life-saver for the person whose spirit is willing but Jrhose artistic ability is a little doubt- ul. Another method is using the colored enamels which come in small cans. A variety of positive colors is offered by the makers of these .enamels. The design may be made by the painter and transfered to the furniture by car- bon paper or by coating the back of the tracing paper with chalk and going over the design with a pencil. The advantage of the latter method is that the chalk may be rubbed off if the pencil slips or the outline is a little wobbly. The enamel may be used in the consistency which is comes in the can. The difficulty with enamels is that the colors may not be blended to har- monize with an off-color rug or drap- eries. For instance, if the color pre- dominating in the drapes is a shade of orange, no enamel may be purchased in this color. Mixing of oils with the enamels or mixing powdered colors is an extremely doubtful job. Tubes of paint 'ground in japan may be bought at some of the paint stores and the color. desired mixed. It is practical to mix some of the enamel used to paint the furniture with this if the color will mix right. As this acts like a flat paint, the design may be varnished over after it is dry to give it the same gloss as the furniture. Orient Is Responsible for Chrysanthemums The chrysanthemum is a flower of the east, the Japanese and Chinese beginning their study and culture of this flower more than two thousand years ago. By the Japanese it is termed "Queen of the Flowers," and they have named the month in which its blooms are at their height "Kiku Dzuki" in honor of the chrysanthemum, The progenitor of this flower is the same plant which grows wild in China and Japan, and it is from chrysanthemum indicum and chrys- anthemum sinense that the present varieties have been grown. After the Chinese and Japanese began to cultivate the flower thoroughly about the eighth century, it became an object of admiration, evidenced by its frequent appearance in their art and literature. In 1689 the flower was growing in Holland. In 1754 it was introduced in England but soon disappeared there. It was then introduced to France and reintroduced to Eng- land. In 1820 there were only twenty varieties, the present num- bers of varieties being produced since then. A new material has been devised for lampshades which is greatly bene- fited by an occasional application of soap and water. The shades are bound together with a special tape which in- sures their stability. Rayon is being used more and more for curtaining. A rayon gauze is re- commended for casement curtains. Oil- cloth has also come to the fore with new designs and a consequent increase in adaptability.
