24 WINNETKA TALK December 1, 1928 Traffic in Dope Described to Business Woman's Club The traffic in smoking opium, mor- phine, and cocaine with its resultant crime was interestingly touched upon by Miss Mary D. Bailey, assistant United States district attorney, who spoke informally at the Business and Professional Woman's club of Wil- mette during its dinner meeting Mon- day evening. She recounted her own experiences during the year she has been associat- BARRY'S BIG and LINOLEUM SALE Starting December 1st and continuing all month. Open Saturday Evenings Until 9 P. M. DAVID G. A case of opium pipes, smoking opium, morphine containers, capsules and cubes, and other proofs of drug addiction seized as evidence for the courts was displayed for an audience that evinced its interest by entering into a question-and-answer discussion with Miss Bailey at the close of her talk. The club, as part of its Christmas program, will send gifts to the veterans at Great Lakes. Mrs. Earl Robert Green, 315 War- wick road, Kenilworth, will entertain The Reading group on Friday, Dec- ember 7, for luncheon. During the afternoon Miss Rutheda L. Watson Gardens along the north shore, made indigenous to the location, were es- pecially approved by Dudley Crafts Watson when he lectured recently be- fore the Garden Club of Illinois in the 3al Tabarin of Hotel Sherman, Chi- cago. He visualized and illustrated on the screen in color a north shore garden near the lake which adjoined a house built on a cliff shore-line with the gardens taking on the cool blues and lavenders in harmony with the cool blue of the sky to the east and the blues and lavenders of the lake, plant- ed with low-growing flowers in pro- tection against the strong lake winds. Gardens planted on the lake shore on this side, he reminded, should be planted with the cool colors harmon- izing with the aspect and atmosphere of this side of the lake, while the bright, warm colors--yellows and reds importantly--should emblazon gardens on the opposite shore where there are western afterglows and warm colors. In planting any garden, he advised. it is well to remember this suggestion --cool colors to the eastern view, warm to the west. Mr. Watson showed pictures of giant pansies and of trumpet vines growing in the tiny gardens of Nor- way, and told of the blooming of geor- geous roses in the frozen north as far as the Arctic circle. He showed pic- tures from gardens in Seville, Granada, Versailles and Kew, and pleaded for restraint in any garden. The far- famed gardens of England, rampant with bloom, may be criticized, he averred, for their too great abundance of bloom and flower masses running riot. While it is customary to ap- proach the survey of gardens in Europe through English gardens, this is hardly correct, he feels, for England is a country with no heavy frosts or frozen stretches, no droughts of barren dryness. The lawns of England rarely require sprinkling. N. S.
