|. December 8, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 69 Book News NOVEL OF POETRY How verse is sometimes tragically linked up with life was brought to Ar- thur Stringer's attention a few years ago. In the Bookman appeared a poem by Mr. Stringer entitled "Habit." Shortly after the poem was published, the author received a poignant and striking letter from a woman whose son had been broken by the drink habit. The letter told in pitiful detail the sordid, tragic story. The son had read the poem and found it, apparently, applicable to him- self, He cut the lines from a magazine, wrote a farewell letter and attached the poem to it. He then locked him- self in his room and committed suicide by blowing his brains out. The poem was published in Arthur Stringer's new volume of poetry, "A Woman at Dusk," which was recently published by Bobbs-Merrill. The fol- lowing are the lines which unwittingly caused a suicide: Habit "See, blind and weak, he whimpers at my breast, Teasing and petulant he whines, And will not rest! Now snarling careless-clawed, he drags at me In uncouth play so fierce I dare Not set him free! Now gross and slather-fanged and grim of will He stalks me naked through the world, Whom he must kill." Arthur Stringer is known primarily as a novelist but his first work was poetry and in the intervening years he has continued to write verse. A new novel by him will appear in the spring.
