John S. M. Allely Given Promotion While Overseas

Many citizens of Lindsay will read with interest the following article from the Saskatoon Star - Pheonix [sic] referring to John S. M. Allely, a son of Mr. G.W. Allely, Kent St. West, a graduate of Lindsay Collegiate Institute and a brother of Town Clerk and Treasurer W.R. Allely. The paper produces a picture of Lt.-Col. Allely and adds:

Lieut. Col. J. S. M. Allely, who has been promoted overseas from the rank of Major, according to word received by Mrs. Allely, 430 Albert Ave.

A graduate of Queen's and Harvard Universities, Lt.-Col. Allely was with the Economics Department of the University of Saskatchewan for three years before he was called out for full time duty as Adjutant of the University of Saskatchewan Contingent, Canadian Officers Training Corps.

In January 1642 [sic - 1942], he was promoted to the rank of Captain and was posted to the staff of National Defence Headquarters at Ottawa. He returned to Saskatoon in September 1943, when he was made Administration Officer of the C.O.T.C. and was promoted to the rank of Major in December of that year. Before going overseas Col. Allely was serving as a special instructor of Economics in Civil Affairs Course at Kingston with which service he is now overseas.

Many residents of Norland and district will be pleased to read in the last issue of this paper a clipping from a Saskatoon paper in reference to the honors achieved by Jack Allely of Lindsay who for years was our local post master and genial merchant. Jack has certainly climbed the ladder of fame by leaps and bounds both in the educational and military world. His last promotion being that of Lieut.-Colonel. His brother Capt. Laurie Allelly [sic] is also overseas and we will be watching with interest their progress as the manfully take their place in their country's cause.
