Britisher well-known at Omemee killed in action Omemee, Oct. 12—A September 22 edition of the Sussex-Express and County-Herald reaching Gilbert Franks, of R.R. 1, Omemee, from England, reveals the news of the death on active service in North-west Europe of Pte. Donald Richard Carey Smith, a former employee on Mr. Frank’s farm, who came to Canada from England shortly before war broke out in 1939.
How the young soldier was killed, or the exact date, is not disclosed in the brief item. Pte. Smith, the son of Alpheus Smith, O.B.E., of 19 De-Chamroad, St. Leonards-on-Sea, farmed in England for several years previous to his arrival in Canada. When war broke out, he left the farm and enlisted with the Toronto Scottish Regiment, sailing back to England with the Second Canadian Division. He was 34.
