He was in action on D-Day and fought in many of the early battles, including the battle of the Arden River, up until July 18th. While in a wheat field below Caen he sustained severe injuries to both legs, but in spite of these wounds, he managed to crawl for some distance until he met tanks of his own unit. To escape being hit by these he stuck his helmet on a bayonet and so attracted the attention of rescue workers, who administered first aid. Pte. Griffin reached England July 23 and remained in the hospital until he was ready to return to Canada. On November 15th he arrived at Christie St. Hospital, Toronto, and was met by his parents and sister Lottie. He has been released for six weeks and is at present in West Guilford. Although on crutches, Val is in the best of spirits after his very trying experiences.
